海外や日本でも英語の教科書に採用されている『The Giving Tree』という絵本の読み聞かせ動画です。日本語では『おおきな木』という絵本になっています。
大きなりんごの木と男の子のお話です。りんごの木はいつも遊びに来る男の子が大好きでした。男の子もりんごの木が大好きでしたが、年月が経つうちに男の子はどんどん変化して行きます。どんなときでも、やさしく包み込む母のようなりんごの木は、少年のどんな望みも叶えてあげようとします。
前半は絵を見ながらワンセンテンスで流れていき、後半になると少し長めの文が続きます。ですが、よく聴くと同じパターンの繰り返しなのでイメージするのは難しくないと思います。
The Giving Tree
子どもと一緒に日本語に訳してみました。細かい部分間違っていたらごめんなさい。
Once there was a tree…
あるところに一本の木がありました。
and she loved a little boy.
そして彼女は小さな男の子を愛していました。
And every day the boy would come
そして毎日、男の子はやってきた
and he would gather her leaves
葉を集めて王冠を作った
and make them into crowns and play king of the forest.
そして、森の王様遊びをしていました。
He would climb up her trunk
彼は彼女（木）の幹に登った
and swing from her branches
そして、枝でブラブラした
and eat apples.
そしてりんごを食べました。
And they would play hide-and-go-seek.
そしてかくれんぼをして遊んだ。
And when he was tired,he would sleep in her shade.
そして、疲れたら彼女の木陰で眠っていた。
And the boy loved the tree…
そして男の子はその木を愛していた。。
very much. And the tree was happy.
とても。そしてその木は幸せだった。
But time went by.
しかし、時間は経ちました。
And the boy grew older.
そして、男の子は年をとりました。
And the tree was often alone.
そして、木はしばしば一人でした。
Then one day the boy came to and the tree said,
そしてある日男の子が来ると木が言った。
“Come, Boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches
and eat apples and play in my shade and be happy.”
「おいで、少年、ここへ来て私の幹に登って枝にぶら下がり、そしてりんごを食べて、私の木陰で遊んでくれたら幸せです」
“I am too big to climb and play,” said the boy.
「ボクは登ったり遊んだりするには大きすぎるよ」男の子は言った。
“I want to buy things and have fun. I want some money. Can you give me some money?”
「ボクは何か買えるもので楽しみたい。ボクはお金がほしい、いくらかお金をくれない？」
“I’m sorry,” said the tree, “but I have no money.
「ごめんなさい」と木は言った。「でもお金はないの
I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in the city.
私はただ葉とりんごだけ持っている。りんごをお取り、少年。そして、町でお売りなさい。
Then you will have money and you will be happy.”
それであなたはお金を手に入れて幸せになれるでしょう。」
And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples
and carried them away. And the tree was happy.
そして男の子は木に登って、りんごを収穫して持ち去りました。
そして木は幸せだった。
But the boy stayed away for a long time…and the tree was sad.
しかし、男の子は長い間来ませんでした。。そして木は悲しかった。
And then one day the boy came back and the tree shook with joy and she said,
そしてある日、男の子は戻って来ました、そして木は喜んで言いました、
“Come, Boy, climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and be happy.”
「いらっしゃい、私の幹に登って私の枝にぶら下がってくれたら幸せです。」
“I am too busy to climb trees,” said the boy.
「私は忙しくて登っていられないね」と男の子は言いました。
“I want a house to keep me warm,” he said.
「私は暖かくして居られる家がほしい。」と彼は言った。
“I want a wife and I want children, and so I need a house. Can you give me a house?”
「わたしは妻と子供がほしいので、家が必要なんだよ。家をくれないかい？」
“I have no house,” said the tree.
「私は家を持っていません」木は言った。
“The forest is my house, but you may cut off my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy.”
この森が私のうち、でもあなたは私の枝を切って家を建ててもいいですよ。そしたらあなたは幸せでしょ。」
And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his house. And the tree was happy.
そうすると、男の子は彼女の枝をカットして、彼の家を建設するために、それらを持ち去りました。そして木はそれが幸せでした。
But the boy stayed away for a long time. And when he came back,
the tree was so happy.
しかし、男の子は長い間その場を離れていた。そして、彼が戻ってきた時、木はとても幸せだった。
she could hardly speak. “Come, Boy,” she whispered,
彼女は、ほとんど話すことができませんでした。「おいで少年」彼女はささやいた。
“come and play.”
「ここへ来てお遊び」
“I am too old and sad to play,” said the boy.
「遊ぶにはあまりに年をとっていて悲しいです」と少年は言った。
“I want a boat that will take me far away from here. Can you give me a boat?”

あなたは、ボートをくれることができますか？」
“Cut down my trunk and make a boat,” said the tree.
『私の幹を切り倒してボートを作って」木は言った。
“Then you can sail away…and be happy.”
「それで、あなたは出航することができます。。そして幸せになる」
And so the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat and sailed away.
そして、男の子は幹を切り倒してボートを作り出航した。
And the tree was happy… but not really.
そして、この木は幸せでした。。しかし、本当にでなく。
And after a long time the boy came back again.
そして何年ものちに再び男の子は、戻ってきた。
“I am sorry, Boy,” said the tree,
「ごめんなさい、少年」木は言った。
“but I have nothing left to give you My apples are gone.”
「でも、私はあなたにあげられるものは何も残っていません。私のりんごはなくなりました。」
“My teeth are too weak for apples,” said the boy.
「私の歯は、リンゴのためにあまりに弱いです」と、男の子は言いました。
“My branches are gone,” said the tree.
「私の枝はもうありません」木は言った。
“You cannot swing on them”
「あなたはそれでぶらぶらできないわね」
“I am too old to swing on branches,” said the boy.
「ブランコするには年を取り過ぎている」と男の子は言った。
“My trunk is gone,” said the tree. “You cannot climb”
『私の幹はもうないの」と木は言った。「もう登れないわ」
“I am too tired to climb,” said the boy.
「私は登るにはもう疲れました」と少年は言った・
“I am sorry,” sighed the tree.
『ごめんなさい」木はため息を付いた。
“I wish that I could give you something…but I have nothing left.
「あなたに何かあげられたらなぁ・・・でも私には何も残っていません
。
I am just an old stump. I am sorry…”
私は、ただの古い株です。残念です。」
“I don’t need very much now,” said the boy,
「私は今あまり多くを必要としません」と少年は言った。
“just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired.”
「ただ、座って休める静かな場所だけで良いのです。私はつかれた」
“Well,”said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could,
「じゃあ」とその木はできるだけ背を伸ばしながら言いました。
“well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting. Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest.” And the boy did.
「て、古い株は、座って、休むことによいです。ここにいらっしゃい、座っておやすみなさい。」そして少年はそうした。
And the tree was happy.
そして、木は幸せでした。
