英語絵本「Whistle for Willie」の読み聞かせです。前回の「The Snowy Day」の2作目になります。
主人公のピーターは、あるとき少年が口笛を吹いて飼い犬を呼んでいるのを見かけます。そして、彼も同じように口笛で自分の飼い犬と遊びたいと願いました。でも、ピーターは口笛がまだ吹けません。何度も何度も練習しますが、なかなか思うように吹けません。あるとき、ここで口笛！という場面が訪れます。
今回のお話は関係代名詞文もあり初級よりすこし上かもしれません。
全体を通して写実的な描写表現が多く、英語の文章だけだと単語の並びによって少しわかりにくい表現もありましたがイラストを見ながらイメージすることで意味を絞ることができました。
低学年向けの絵本に出てくる表現ですから、文章に触れて慣れるのが一番ですね。
Oh, how Peter wished he could whistle!
ああ、なんて、ピーターは、彼が口笛を吹くことができることを願ったでしょう！
He saw a boy playing with his dog.
彼は犬と遊んでいる少年を見た。
Whenever the boy whistled, the dog ran straight to him.
少年が口笛を吹くたびに、犬は彼にまっすぐ走った。
Peter tried and tried to whistle, but he couldn’t.
ピーターは口笛を吹いてみようと試しましたが、彼にはできませんでした。
So instead he began to turn himself around –
だから代わりに、彼は自分自身で回り始めた
around and around he whirled…
彼は周りをくるくる回った
faster and faste…
早く、より早く
When he stopped everything turned down..
彼はすべてが止まったときにうつむいて..
and up..
そして顔を上げる
and up..
顔を上げて
and down..
うつむいて、
and around
そして回って
and around.
そして回る。
Peter saw his dog.
ピーターは彼の犬を見た。
Willie, coming quick as a wink, he hid in an empty carton lying on the sidewalk.
ウィリーは一瞬ウインクしながらやってきたので、彼は歩道の上にある空の箱に隠れました。
“Wouldn’t it be funny if I whistle?” Peter thought.
「笛を吹くと面白くないだろうか？」ピーターは思った。
“Willie would stop and look all around to see who it was.”
「ウィリーは、それが誰だったかを見るために立ち止まり、周りを見るでしょう。」
Peter tried again to whistle – but still he couldn’t.
ピーターは再び口笛を吹くように試みました – それでも彼は口笛が吹けません。
So Willie just walked on.
だからウィリーはただ歩いていた。
Peter got out of the carton and started home.
ピーターは箱から出てまっすぐ家に帰りました。
On the way he took some colored chalks out of his pocket and drew a long, long line
途中で彼はポケットの中からいくつかの色チョークを取り出し、長い線を引いた。
right up to his door.
彼のドアまで。
He stood there and tried to whistle again.
彼はそこに立って、再び口笛を試みた。
He blew till his cheeks were tired.
彼は頬が疲れるまで吹いた。
But nothing happened.
しかし、何も起こらなかった。
He went into his house and put on his father’s old hat to make himself feel more grown-up.
彼は自分の家に入って、父親の古い帽子を着て、もっと大人になったと感じた。
He looked into the mirror to practice whistling.
彼は笛を練習するために鏡の中を見た。
Still no whistle.
まだホイッスルはありません。
When his mother saw what he was doing,
彼の母親は彼が何をしているのかを見ていたとき、
Peter pretended that he was his father.
ピーターは彼のお父さんの真似をしていた。
He said, “I’ve come home early today, dear. Is Peter here?”
彼は言う「私は今日、早く帰宅しました。 ピーターはいるかな？」
His mother answered.
彼の母は答えた。
“Why no, he’s outside with Willie.”
「あらいいえ、彼はウイリーと外です。」
“We’ll, I’ll go out and look for them,” said Peter.
「それじゃ、私は外へ彼らを探しに行きます」とピーターは（真似て）言った。
First he walked along a crack in the sidewalk.
まず彼は歩道の亀裂に沿って歩いた。
Then he tried to run away from his shadow.
それから彼は彼の陰から逃げようとした。
He jumped off his shadow.
彼は彼の陰から飛び離れた。
But when he landed they were together again.
しかし、彼が着陸したとき、彼らは再び一緒にいた。
He came to the corner where the carton was,
彼は箱があった角に来て、
and who should he see but Willie!
そして彼はウィリー以外の誰に会うでしょう！
Peter scrambled under the carton.
ピーターは箱の下に急ぎました。
He blew and blew and blew.
彼は吹いて、吹いて、吹きました。
Suddenly – out came a real whistle!
突然－本当の口笛がでてきました！
Willie stopped and looked around to see who it was.
ウィリーは立ち止まり、そしてそれが誰だか周りを見ました。
“It’s me,” Peter shouted, and stood up.
「僕だよ」とピーターが叫んだ。そして、立ち上がった。
Willie raced straight to him.
ウィリーはまっすぐ彼に向かった。
Peter ran home to show his father and mother what he could do.
ピーターは走って家に帰り、父と母に自分ができることを示しました。
They loved Peter’s whistling.
彼らはピーターの笛吹きが大好きでした。
So did Willie.
ウィリーもそうだった。
Peter’s mother asked him and Willie to go on an errand to the grocery store.
ピーターの母親は彼とウィリーに食料品店へおつかいを頼んだ。
He whistled all the way there,
彼はそこまでずっと口笛を吹いていた。
and he whistled all the way home.
そして家に帰る間中ずっと吹いていた。
