子供たちに人気のお馴染みピートの英語絵本です。今回ピートはお母さんとはじめての図書館。初めて自分だけの図書カードを手に入れて大喜びです。興味のある本を手に取り、パイロットになったり魔法使いになったり、本を通して自由な想像を掻き立てます。

以下ご紹介の読み聞かせ動画は絵本のピートたちにアニメのような動きがあります。英語の読み聞かせにちょっとしたアクセントがあることで、英語を聞きなれていない小さいお子さんでも最後まで英語の読み聞かせに集中力を切らすことなく取り組めそうですね。
繰り返し何度も聞き返すようにして、英語のリスニングに慣れていくことが非常に大切なので、こういった読み聞かせ動画が増えてくると良いですよね。
to be very stillの意味
文中に出てくる、生き物学者は生物を研究するためにvery stillな状態になるのですが、この、very stillとはどんな意味なのでしょうか？ 直訳すると「非常にまだ」ですが、辞書で調べると「とても静か」「じっと」といったニュアンスですね。ほかにも、「持ちこたえているto be ~で 「～になる」、「～である」といった感じなので、to be very stillは「とても静かにしている」「じっとしている」のような意味になります。
save the dayの意味
save the dayを直訳すると、「その日を救う」という意味になってしまいます。こちらの表現はイディオムになっており、「何とか危機を乗り切る」「窮地から抜け出す」といった訳語となります。スーパーヒーローの物語には頻出しそうですね。
英語絵本「Checks Out the Library」の読み聞かせに日本語訳をつけてみました。

Pete’s mom is taking him to the library for the first time.
ピートはお母さんに連れられて、初めて図書館に行きます。
The librarian gives Pete his very own library card.
司書はピートに自分だけの図書カードを渡します。
“Cool!” says Pete.
「かっこいい！」とピートは言います。
The librarian smiles. “Time for the tour!”

The librarian takes Pete through the library.

There’s a big desk where people wait to check out books.
大きな机があり、本を借りる人が待っています。
Pete sees some of his friends reading at a long table.
ピートは、長いテーブルで本を読んでいる友達を見ました。
It’s very peaceful and quiet. How relaxing!
とても平和で静かだ。なんてリラックスしているんだろう。
The librarian takes Pete to her favorite room.
司書はピートを彼女のお気に入りの部屋に連れて行きます。
There are lots of Pete-sized chairs and tables and shelves.
ピートサイズの椅子とテーブルと棚がたくさんあります。
There are books of every shape, size, and color.
あらゆる形、大きさ、色の本があります。
“What do I do now?” Pete asks.
「今何をすればいいの？」ピートは尋ねます。
“Now you read a book.” the librarian says.
「今、あなたは本を読みます。」 司書は言います。
“Which book should I read?” asks Pete.
「どの本を読もうかな？」 ピートは尋ねます。
“You can read any book you like.” says a librarian.
「あなたは好きな本を読むことができます。」 司書は言います。
Pete looks around. There are so many books!

Pete picks up a book all about airplanes and jets.
ピートは、飛行機やジェット機に関する本を手に取りました。
He reads and pretends he’s a stunt pilot.
彼は本を読みながら、自分がスタントパイロットであるかのように振舞います。
He flies a super fast jet and does loop the loops and spirals high in the sky!
超高速のジェット機を操縦し、空高くループやスパイラルをするのです。
Then Pete finds a book with dragons, wizards and unicorns on the cover.
次にピートは、ドラゴンや魔法使い、ユニコーンが描かれた本を見つけました。
He reads it and imagines that he is a powerful wizard, using magic spells and
special wand to defend his castle against a fire-breathing dragon.
そして、自分が強力な魔法使いになって、魔法の呪文と特別な杖を使って、お城を守ることを想像します。

Next Pete opens up a book about spiders and insects.
次にピートは、クモや昆虫についての本を開く。
He reads it and imagines that he is a scientist studying all types of critters in the wild.
彼はそれを読みながら、自分が野生のあらゆる種類の生き物を研究する科学者であることを想像する。
He has to be very still to study some critters…

and very fast to study others.

Then Pete chooses a book with all sorts of scary monsters on the cover.
そしてピートは、表紙に怖いモンスターがたくさん描かれている本を選びます。
It is a book of fairy tales.

Pete reads it and pretends that he is in a dark, spooky forest trying to outsmart a big bad wolf.

He reads it and imagines that he is a robot at a robot dance party.
それを読んで、自分がロボットのダンスパーティに参加しているロボットになったつもりでいます。
His arms and legs make whizzing sounds when he moves.
腕や足が動くと、ピッピッピッピッという音がする。
When robot Pete speaks he says, “Bleep, Bleep, Bleep!”
ピートが話すと、”ピッ、ピッ、ピッ！”と言う。
Next Pete picks up a book about superheroes.
次に、ピートはスーパーヒーローに関する本を手に取ります。
He reads it and makes believe that he is a superhero.
彼はそれを読んで、自分がスーパーヒーローだと思い込みます。
He flies around the city in a colorful cape chasing bad guys and saving the day.

Then Pete spots a big book about the ocean and all its creatures.

He reads it and imagines that he is a scientist in a submarine deep in the Atlantic Ocean, looking for whales, squids and sharks.
