英語絵本「WALK ON THE WILD SIDE」の読み聞かせです。冒険好きなクマ、ヘラジカ、ビーバー達は山の頂上を目指してハイキングに出かけます。
途中、いくつもの難関を超え、お互いを助け合い、頂上に立つときのすがすがしさ。競争もいいけど、みんなで一緒に乗り越えて味会う達成感も楽しそうですね。
There once was a bear, a moose and a beaver who loved adventure.
かつて冒険を愛したクマ、ヘラジカ、ビーバーがいました。
But sometimes their competitive natures got in the way of having fun.
しかし、時には彼らの競争的な性質が楽しみの邪魔になります。
One sunny morning, the bear, the moose and the beaver decided it was a great day to climb a mountain.
ある陽がさんさんと降り注ぐ朝、クマ、ヘラジカとビーバーは、山を登る素晴らしい日であると決めました。
To get to the mountain, they descended into a valley…
山に着くために、彼らは谷に降りました…
Walked through a grassy field…
芝生のフィールドを歩いて…
ARE WE THERE YET?
まだありますか？
Waded through a stream…
流れを歩いて渡りました…
And crossed a deep canyon.
そして深い峡谷を渡った。
DON’T LOOK DOWN.
下を向いてはいけません。
At the foot of the mountain, they stopped for a snack.
山のふもとで、彼らはおやつのために立ち寄った。
Between mouthfuls, the bear, the moose and the beaver discussed ways to make their hike more interesting.
一口の間、クマ、ヘラジカ、ビーバーはハイキングをもっと面白くする方法を話し合いました。
The beaver thought the best way to add some excitement was to make it a race.
ビーバーは、興奮を加える最善の方法はレースにすることだと考えました。

As soon as they finished their last bites, the three friends were off and running.
彼らが最後の一口を終えるとすぐに、3人の友人は離れて走っていました。
The race was on!

Thanks to his long legs, the moose took an early lead.
彼の長い足のおかげで、ヘラジカは早くリードしました。
But the beaver and the bear followed right on his tail.

Then just as the moose rounded a bend in the mountain path, a boulder came tumbling down toward him.
その後、ムースが山道の曲がり角を曲がったら、岩が彼に向かって転がり落ちてきました。
Fortunately, the moose jumped out of harm’s way just in time.
幸いなことに、ヘラジカはすぐに危機から飛び出しました。
Unfortunately, he had jumped over the side of the mountain.
残念ながら、彼は山の側面を飛び越えていました。
AHHHHH!
ああ！
When the beaver rounded the bend, the moose was out of sight.
ビーバーが曲がりくねったとき、ヘラジカは見えなくなりました。
Worried that he had fallen behind, the beaver picked up his pace.
彼が遅れたことを心配して、ビーバーはペースを上げた。
When the bear came running by, he heard the moose’s cry for help.
熊が駆け寄ってきたとき、彼は助けを求めるヘラジカの叫びを聞いた。
The bear followed the sound to the mountain’s edge, where he saw the moose dangling from a tree branch.
熊は音をたどって山の端まで行き、そこでヘラジカが木の枝からぶら下がっているのを見ました。
HELP!
助けて！
Fearlessly, the bear attempted a daring rescue. Sadly, he failed.
恐れることなく、クマは大胆な救助を試みました。悲しいことに、彼は失敗しました。
WHOOPS.

Thanks to the moose’s quick reflexes, the bear’s life was saved.
ヘラジカの素早い反射のおかげで、熊の命は救われました。

But now they were both hanging on for their lives.

The moose and the bear’s cries for help echoed up the mountain.
ヘラジカと熊の叫び声が山に響き渡りました。
The beaver followed their calls back down the path.
ビーバーは呼び声に沿ってたどりました。
HELP!
助けて！
The beaver’s instincts kicked in.
ビーバーの本能が働きました。
He chewed down a tree…
彼は木をかじった…
Carved out a few notches…
いくつかの切り目を刻みました…
And lowered the simple ladder to the moose and the bear so they could climb up.
そして、彼らが登ることができるように、ヘラジカと熊に簡単なはしごを降ろしました。
ARGHHH!
ああ！
Back on solid ground, the three friends realized their hike had become a little too exciting.
しっかりした地面に戻り、3人の友人は、ハイキングが少しエキサイティングになったことに気づきました。
If they were going to make it to the top of the mountain, a slower pace might be better.
もし彼らが山の頂上に行くなら、ゆっくりしたペースが良いかもしれません。
And that’s when their hike became interesting.
そして、それが彼らのハイキングが面白くなったときです。
They explored a dark cave…
彼らは暗い洞窟を探索しました…

Discovered a prehistoric fossil…

And helped one another along the way.

At the end of the day, the bear, the moose and the beaver agreed that reaching the top of the mountain was great,
but enjoying the journey together was even better.
一日の終わりに、クマ、ヘラジカ、ビーバーは、山の頂上に到達するのが素晴らしいことに同意しました。
しかし、一緒に旅を楽しむことはさらに良いことでした。
