英語絵本「Umbrellabird’s Umbrella」の読み聞かせです。カサドリはアメリカの熱帯地方に住む大きな傘状の冠羽と頸からたれ下がる羽毛が特徴の鳥です。
雨も降っていないのに、どうしていつも傘をさしてるの？と、ほかの鳥たちにからかわれるカサドリ。ですが、そんな傘のような羽毛が役に立ち、みんなにうらやましがられる時がやってきます。
Umbrellabird is unlike any other bird.
カサドリは他の鳥とは異なります。
He has very unusual feathers.
彼はとても変わった羽を持っています。
The other birds teased umbrella bird about his unusual feathers.
他の鳥は彼の変わった羽について傘の鳥をからかった。
They think his feathers look like a giant umbrella.
彼らは彼の羽が巨大な傘のように見えたと思います。
“Why is your umbrella up? the other birds asked Umbrellabird.
「どうしてあなたの傘はさしているのですか？他の鳥たちはカサドリに尋ねました。
“Is it going to rain today?”
「今日は雨が降りますか？」
The teasing makes Umbrellabird very unhappy.
からかうことはカサドリをとても不幸にします。
He tries to hide his feathers under a hat.
彼は羽毛を帽子の下に隠そうとします。
But it is no use his umbrella always pops up.
しかしそれは無駄にいつも開いています。
One day, Umbrellabird decides to visit his uncle.
ある日、カサドリは彼の叔父を訪ねることにしました。
He hops on his unicycle and pedals uptown.
彼は一輪車に乗って住宅地区へこぎました。
”Look at those ugly feathers!”
「それらの醜い羽を見てください！」
the other birds call as Umbrellabird rides by.
他の鳥たちはカサドリが通り過ぎるときに呼んだ。
Umbrellabird pretends not to hear them.
カサドリはそれらを聞いていないふりをします。
He looks up at the sky and keeps on pedaling.
彼は空を見上げてペダリングをこぎ続けます。
“Uh-oh!” says Umbrellabird.
“ええとああ！” カサドリは言います。
He sees dark clouds way up high.
彼は暗い雲がずっと高く上がるのを見ている。
Suddenly, it begins to pour.
突然、それは流れ始めます。
But Umbrellabird notices that he is not getting wet.
しかしカサドリは彼が濡れていないことに気づいた。
Umbrellabird’s umbrella is keeping him dry.
カサドリの傘は彼を乾かしている。
The other birds look for a dry place.
他の鳥たちは乾いた場所を探します。
Umbrellabird calls to them.
カサドリはかれらを呼びます。
“Come under my umbrella.
「私の傘の下に来なさい。
It’s dry under here!”
ここは乾いている！」
“Quickly! Quickly!” says Umbrellabird as the other birds duck under his feathers.
「早く！早く！」アヒルなど他の鳥でさえカサドリは彼の羽の下へと呼んだ。
The birds stay under Umbrellabird’s umbrella until the rain stops.
雨が止まるまで、鳥たちはカサドリの傘の下にとどまります。
All the birds think Umbrellabird.
すべての鳥はカサドリのことを考えます。
“Your wonderful umbrella kept us dry.” they say.
「あなたの素晴らしい傘は私たちを乾かした。」 彼らはいった。
“We are sorry we upset you with our teasing.
「私たちがからかうことであなたを怒らせて申し訳ありません。
We wish we had umbrellas like you!”
あなたのような傘があったらいいのに」
Now Umbrellabird holds his head up high when he is out riding his unicycle.
今は、カサドリが一輪車に乗って外出しているときは彼の頭を高く上げます。
And sometimes, Umbrellabird even wishes for a little rain!
