英語絵本「The girl who never made mistakes」の読み聞かせ動画のご紹介です。
この物語は、「ビアトリス」という女の子が主人公です。彼女は今まで一度も間違いをしたことがありません。
彼女は数学の宿題を忘れることもなく、靴下を間違えて履くこともなく、毎年学校のタレントショーで優勝します。実際、町中の人々は彼女を「間違いを犯さない女の子」と呼んでいます。でもある日、彼女は初めて避けられない間違いを犯してしまいます。それから彼女は、「ミスをしない女の子」ではなく、気持ちを軽くし「ただのビアトリス」として楽しむようになります。
この絵本は「間違いから学び成長する」という気づきを子どもたちに与えてくれるマインドセットにもなりそうです。
物語は楽しく、子供たちが興味を持って読むことができるため、英語学習においても楽しく学べそうですね。
絵本中に出てくるルバーブマフィンについて
ルバーブとは最近日本のスーパーでもよく見ることがあるシベリア原産のタデ科の多年草の植物。繊維が多く独特の香りと酸味が特徴的でペクチンを多く含むので、西洋では昔からジャムやゼリーなどに利用されることが多い植物です。
マフィンにすると真っ赤で酸味の爽やかなルバーブが散りばめられて甘酸っぱいマフィンに仕上がります。
kiddoとは、どういうときに使う表現？
日本語で「子供」を意味する英語の単語「kid」に、「o」を付けて「kiddo」とすることで、親しみを込めた言い方にすることができます。親や祖父母が子供や孫に対してよく使う表現です。日本語で言うと「子供さん」「坊や」「お嬢ちゃん」などに近い意味合いです。
例えば、
* “How are you doing, kiddo?”
* “Are you ready for bed, kiddo?”
* “Good job, kiddo!”
などのように使われます。
“Kiddo”は、親しみを込めて子供や若者を呼ぶことができる、カジュアルな表現でもあります。

After all, her juggling act had won three years in a row.
彼女のジャグリングは3年連続で優勝しているのだ。
Most people in town didn’t even know Beatrice’s name.
町のほとんどの人は、ベアトリスの名前すら知らなかった。
They just called her “Tha girl Who Never Makes Mistakes.”
ただ、”失敗しない娘 “と呼ばれていました。
because for as long as anyone could remember, she never did.
なぜなら、誰もが覚えている限り、彼女は決して間違いを犯さないからです。
Unlike Beatrice, Carl made lots of mistakes.
ベアトリスと違って、カールはたくさんの失敗をした。
He ate his crayone and drew with his green beans.
彼はクレヨンを食べ、インゲンで絵を描いた。
He danced with his hands and played the piano with his feet.

At school, Beatrice was on a cooking team with her two best friends, Millie and Sarah.
ベアトリスは学校で、親友のミリーとサラと一緒に料理チームに所属していました。
To make their giant rhubarb muffins, they need four eggs.
巨大なルバーブマフィンを作るには、卵が4つ必要です。
Beatrice went to the refrigerator and carefully chose the biggest, eggiest egg she could find.
ベアトリスは冷蔵庫に入り、一番大きな卵を慎重に選びました。
But on the way back, her leg slipped out from under her.
しかし、その途中で足元が滑ったのです。
The eggs were flying.
卵が飛んできたのだ。
Beatrice was about to make her first mistake…

But she didn’t! “That was close!” thought Beatriz.

“Sorry, Beatrice. I dropped a piece of rhubarb.

For the rest of the school day, Beatrice could not stop thinking about her Almost Mistake.
学校での残りの時間、ベアトリスは自分の危うい過ちのことを考えずにはいられませんでした。
On her way home from school, Beatriz watched Millie and Sarah ice skating in the park.
学校から帰る途中、ベアトリスは公園でミリーとサラがアイススケートをしているのを見た。
“Come join us!” said Millie. “It’s fun!” said Sarah.
「一緒に来て！」ミリーは言った。 「楽しいよ！」サラは言った。
Beatrice watched them slip and slide on the frozen pond. Millie and Sarah laughed as they wobbled on the ice.
ベアトリスは彼らが凍った池で滑って滑るのを見ていた。 ミリーとサラは氷の上であちこちとよろめきながら笑った。
“no thanks” said Beatrice.
「いいえ、結構です」とベアトリスは言った。
At separate, Beatrice barely touched her food.

“Is everything all right, kiddo?” asked her father.

“I’m worried all messed up tonight” said Beatrice.
「今夜は失敗してしまうのではないかと心配です」とベアトリスは言った。
“And everyone will be watching.”
「そして、みんなが見るでしょう。」
“Worry? You don’t make mistakes!” he said with a smile.
「心配？あなたは間違いを犯しません！」彼は笑顔で言った。
Beatrice tried to smile too.
ベアトリスも笑顔を浮かべようとした。
After supper, Beatrice got ready for the talent show.
夕食後、ベアトリスは才能を披露する準備をしました。
First, she woke Humbert from his nap.
まず、彼女はハンバートを昼寝から起こしました。
Next, she got a salt shaker from the kitchen table.
次に、彼女はキッチンテーブルから塩コショウ入れを取りました。
Finally, she filled a balloon with water.
最後に、彼女は風船に水を入れました。
The school auditorium was packed! Beatrice felt her stomach jumping around inside her.

Beatris waited for her juggling music to begin.

When the music started, she tossed Humbert into the air.
音楽が始まると、彼女はハンバートを空中に投げました。
Next, she added the salt shaker.
次に、彼女は塩コショウ入れを加えました。
And finally, the water balloon.
そして最後に、水風船を加えました。
Beatris didn’t miss a beat!

The crowd clapped with delight.
観客は喜びで拍手をしました。
But Beatrice noticed something odd about the soft shaker…

Humbert was so surprised by his sneeze that he grabbed a water balloon with his claws.

Humbert, pieces of water balloon, and the pepper rained down on top of Beatrice.
ハンバート、水風船の破片、コショウがベアトリスの上に降り注ぐ。
For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, Beatrice made a mistake.
ベアトリスは、誰もが知る限り、初めてミスをしました。
And it was a big one!
そして、それは大きなミスでした！
The music stopped.
音楽が止まった。
Beatrice didn’t know what to do.
ベアトリスはどうしたらいいのかわからなかった。
Cry? Run off stage?
泣くか？ステージから逃げ出す？
The crowd sat stunned.
観客は唖然として座っていた。
They could not believe that the Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes made a mistake!
彼らは「過ちを犯さない少女」が過ちを犯したことが信じられなかったのだ！
Beatrice looked up at Humbert.
ベアトリスはハンバートを見上げました。
He looked back at her.
彼は彼女を見返した。
His hamster fur was soaked and speckled with bits of balloon.
彼のハムスターの毛はびしょびしょで、風船のかけらでまばらになっていた。
Beatrice let out a giggle.
ベアトリスはくすくすと笑みをこぼした。
The giggle grew into a chuckle.
くすくす笑いは笑いへと発展した。
And the chuckle became a laugh.
そして笑いは笑いになった。
The people in the crowd would looked at each other then back at Beatrice.
観客は互いに顔を見合わせ、それからベアトリスに視線を戻した。
They began to giggle.
彼らはくすくす笑い始めた。
Then chuckle. Then – finally – roar with laughter.
それからくすくす笑い。そしてついに、笑いの渦に巻き込まれた。
Beatrice and the audience laughed and so they couldn’t remember why they were laughing.
ベアトリスも観客も笑っていたので、なぜ笑っていたのか思い出せなかった。
That night, Beatrice slept better than she ever had!
その夜、ベアトリスは今までで一番よく眠れた！
In the morning, no fans greeted Beatrice.
朝、ベアトリスを出迎えるファンはいなかった。
When she got dressed, Beatrice – for no reason at all – put a polka dot sock on one foot and a plaid sock on the other.
服を着たベアトリスは、何の理由もなく、片足に水玉の靴下、もう片足にチェック柄の靴下を履いた。
Beatrice and Carl made sandwiches.
ベアトリスとカールはサンドイッチを作りました。
This time, they put the peanut butter and jelly on the outside.
今回は、ピーナッツバターとジェリーを外側に挟みました。
They called this an inside out PB&J!
これを「インサイドアウトPB&J」と呼びました！
Lunch was messy and delicious!
ランチはとても楽しくて、美味しかったです！
Later, Beatrice found Millie and Sarah skating in the park.
その後、ベアトリスは公園でスケートをするミリーとサラを見つけた。
Now, people no longer call her the Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes.
今、人々は彼女を「過ちを犯さない少女」とは呼ばなくなった。
They just call her Beatrice.
ただ、ベアトリスと呼ばれている。
