英語絵本「The Flyers and The Crawlers」の読み聞かせです。Flyersは空を飛ぶもの、Crawlersは地を這うもの。ここでは、空飛ぶ虫と飛べない虫が登場するお話です。
地面から離れられない虫たちは、空飛ぶ虫に不自由さを笑いものにされます。make fun of ～ には、～を物笑いの種にする ちゃかす 笑いものにする からかう などの意味もあるようです。
這いまわる虫たちはfrown不機嫌な表情でうらやみます。
ある嵐の日、空飛ぶ虫たちは雨風に打たれて物陰にlay trapped閉じ込められて動けなくなってしまいます。助けを求めるフライヤーの声を聴いたクローラーたちは考えます。。
余談ですが、crawlerには這うものの他にもこびへつらうという意味もあるようですね。子供と英語の物語にたくさん触れて、辞書で語彙を調べるうちにボキャブラリーがストックされていくのを感じます。
There are lots of bugs in the Garden of All.
すべての庭にはたくさんの虫たちがいます。
Some of them fly and some of them crawl.
彼らのうちのいくつかは飛んで、そのうちのいくつかは這う。
The Flyers believe they are better than those
飛んでいる虫は彼らがそれらより優れていると信じています
who crawl on the ground, and live for grass grows.
地面を這ったり草が生える場所での生活よりも。
They laugh at the crawlers.
彼らは這う者たちを笑います。
They make fun of them too.
また、彼らをからかいます。
”You have no wings,” ladybug says, “so what can you do ?

only we can fly in the sky a blue.

you just crawl on the ground, that makes us better than you!”

The crawlers feel bad that they live on the ground.
地を這う者たちは彼らが地面に住んでいることを悪いと感じます。
“We want to fly too.” Green Worm says with the frown.

“The Flyers are right,” he says as they crawl.

“Crawling isn’t special. It’s not special at all.

But one stormy day, there’s sad feelings changed.
しかしある嵐の日、悲しい気持ちが変わりました。
When the Flyers of the garden got stuck in the rain.
庭の飛ぶ虫たちが雨の中で立ち往生したとき。
There they lay trapped under fallen sticks, rocks, and leaves.
そこで、彼らは落ちた棒、岩と葉の下に閉じ込められて伏せてしまいます。
So Ladybug called out to the Crawlers,
それで、てんとう虫は這う虫たちに大声を上げました。
”Help us! Help us please!”
「私たちを助けて。お願い私たちを助けて！」
The Crawlers hid in their homes underground,
這う虫たちは地下の彼らの家に隠れています。
glad everyone they loved was there safe and sound.
彼らの大切なみんなが無事にそこにいたことがうれしい。
But they could hear the Flyers up there, calling for help.
しかし彼らはフライヤーたちの助けを呼ぶ声を聞いていた。
“Their wings are too weak,” said Ant.
“彼らの翼は弱すぎる”とアリは言った。
“They cannot help themselves.”
「彼らは自分自身を助けることはできない」
Now they had a problem, one that made Spider think.
今、彼らはクモさんが考える問題を抱えていました。
“Maybe we should not help.”
「たぶん私たちは助けてはならないかもしれない。
“No, we should not do a thing!
「いいえ、我々は何もしてはいけません！
The Flyers are mean.
フライヤーは卑劣です。
They laugh as they fly through the air!
空気中を飛んで、彼らは笑います！
“Now that they need us, let’s Leave them there!”

“No!” said Ant.

“We will never do that!

“We will not change who we are, and leave them there trapped!

So up above ground they want to set the Flyers free.

It was then that the Flyers learned how special Crawlers could be.

Ant was very strong: he pushed the rocks away with ease.

And spiders spun a web, so she could lift the leaves.

day.
