英語絵本「Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car」の読み聞かせです。
前回、舟遊びを楽しんだガンピーさん、今度は車でドライブにお出かけです。走りだすとまたまたご近所の皆さんが連れてって欲しいとお願いにやってきました。前回はみんないろいろな「お願い」表現を使っていましたが、この絵本では”May we?” でまとめられています。
走りだしてしばらくすると雨が降り出し、車が泥道でスタックしてしまいます。押さなきゃ動かない状態になってしまったのですが、今度はみんなあれやこれやと押せない理由を語り始めます。
みんなは車から降りたくないものだから「言い訳」表現がいろいろ出てきますよ。
Mr.Gumpy was going for a ride in his car.
ガンピーさんは、彼の車でドライブに行っていました。
He drove out of the gate and down the lane.
彼は門から出て、通路に沿って運転しました。
“May we come too?” said the children.
「私たちも行っていい？」と子供たち。
“May we?” said the rabbit, the cat, the dog, the pig, the sheep, the chickens, the calf and the goat.
「私たちも？」と、ウサギ、ネコ、イヌ、ブタ、ヒツジ、ニワトリ、子牛、ヤギは言った。
“All right.” said Mr.Gumpy.
「大丈夫。」ガンピー氏は言った。
“But it will be a squash.”
「しかし、窮屈になるでしょう」
And they all piled in.
そして、彼らはすべて積み重なっています。
“It’s a lovely day.” said Mr.Gumpy.
「とってもステキな日だ」とガンピー氏。
“Let’s take the old cart-track across the fields.”
「フィールドの向こうの古い荷車道を使いましょう。」
For a while they drove along happily.
しばらくの間、彼らは幸せに走った。
The sun shan, the engine chugged and everyone was enjoying the ride.
日差し、エンジンは騒がしく、みんな乗り物を楽しんでいた。
“I don’t like the look of those clouds.
「私はあの雲の外観が好きではありません。
I think it’s going to rain.” said Mr.Gumpy.
私は雨が降るだろうと思っています。」とギンピー氏。
Very soon the dark clouds were right overhead
まもなく暗い雲が頭上にあった。
Mr.Gumpy stopped the car.
ガンピーさんは車を止めました。
He jumped out, put up the hood, and down came the rain.
彼は飛び出して、フードを上げます。そして雨が降りました。
The road grew muddier and muddier, and the wheels began to spin.
道路は泥だらけになってしまい、車輪が空転し始めました。
Mr.Grumpy looked at the hill ahead.
グランピーさんは先の丘を見ました。
“Some of you will have to get out and push.” he said.
「あなたのうちの何人かは出て押して行かなければならないでしょう。」 彼は言った。
“Not me,” said the goat. “I’m too old.”
「私ではない」とヤギさん。「私は年を取りすぎている」
“Not me,” said the calf. “I’m too young.”
「私ではない」と子牛。「私は若すぎる」
“Not us,” said the chickens. “We can’t push.”
「私たちではない」とニワトリ。「私たちは押せない」
“Not me,” said the sheep. “I might catch cold.”
「私ではない」とヒツジ。「私は風邪をひく」
“Not me,” said the pig. “I’ve a bone in my trotter.”
「私ではない」とブタ。「私の脚の骨は駆ける用です」
“Not me,” said the dog. “But I’ll drive if you like.”
「私ではない」と犬。「でも、もしよければ私は運転する」
“Not me,” said the cat. “It would ruin my fur.”
「私ではない」とネコ。「それは私の毛皮を台無しにするだろう。」
“Not me,” said the rabbit. “I’m not very well.”
「私ではない」とウサギ。「私はあまりよくありません。」
“Not me,” said the girl. “He’s stronger.”
「私ではない」と女の子。「彼の方が強い」
“Not me,” said the boy. “She’s bigger.”
「私ではない」と男の子。「彼女の方が大きい」
The wheels churned..
車輪はかき回された。。
The car sank deeper into the mud.
車は泥に深く沈んだ。
“Now we’re really stuck.” said Mr.Grumpy.
「今、私たちは本当に立ち往生している。 グランピー氏は言った。
They al got out and pushed.
彼らは外に出て押した。
They pushed and shoved and heaved and strained and gasped and slipped and slithered and squelched.
彼らは押して、押して、持ち上げて、引っぱって、息切れして、すべって、ずるって、押しつけました。
Slowly the car began to move…
ゆっくりと車は動き始めた。
“Don’t stop!” cried Mr.Grumpy.
「やめないで！”」グランピー氏は叫んだ。
“Keep it up! We’re nearly there.”
「続けて！」私たちは近くまできている」
Everyone gave a mighty heave – the tyres gripped..
誰もが大きな衝撃を与えた タイヤはつかんだ。。
The car edged its way to the top of the hill.
車は丘の頂上に向かって進みました。
They looked up and saw that the sun was shining.
彼らは見上げ、太陽が輝いているのを見た。
“We’ll drive home across the bridge.” said Mr.Grumpy.
「我々は、橋の向こうへ車で帰ります。」とグランピーさん。
“There’ll be time for a swim.”
「泳ぎのための時間になるでしょう。」
“Goodbye.” said Mr.Gumpy.
「さようなら」とグランピーさん。
“Come for a drive another day.”
「別の日にドライブに行きましょう」
