英語絵本リトル・クリッターのシリーズから、「JUST NOT INVITED」の読み聞かせです。
inviteは招待されるという意味ですから、NOT INVITEDは招待されなかったとなります。
invitationはここでは招待状。クマさんの誕生パーティーの招待状がクリッターには届いていませんでした。友達のところには届いているのに..とupset（動揺）を隠せません。
今回の文中に何度も出てくるのが ~if~
よくある日本語訳では、（もしも..なら）（たとえ..でも）などが多いですが、今回は（..かどうか）の意味がしっくりくるifの使い方が繰り返されます。
Gator asked me if I was going to Billy bear’s birthday party.
ゲーターは私がクマのビリーの誕生日パーティーに行くかどうか尋ねました。
I got home from school and check the mail to see if my
invitation was there . It wasn’t.
私は学校から家に帰って正体があったかどうかメールをチェックした。それはありませんでした。
I asked Mom if I got any mail or an invitation or something.
私はママに手紙か招待状か何か届いてないか尋ねた。
She said, “Not today.”
彼女は「今日はない」と言った。
I asked my little sister if she got my invitation and hid
it somewhere.

She giggled and said, “Maybe you weren’t invited.”
