ハロウィーンには欠かせない、カボチャの種が成長するまでの様子を描いた英語絵本「It’s Pumpkin Time」の読み聞かせです。
ストーリーに溶け込むように、畑のカボチャやタネや芽の出る様子などイラストがとってもわかりやすくて自然に植物について学べる絵本になっています。
ハロウィーンに向けて自分でカボチャを育てようと、夏の間から準備する子供たち。小さな畑patchを作り種をまきます。patchは小区画の耕作地。パッチワークなどの布きれや周囲の色と違った色の不規則な模様のイメージもありますね。
成長する様子や植物の芽吹く様子などの英語解説は比較的簡単な英語で書かれているので、イラストを眺めながら英語のままスーッと耳に入れると良いリスニングトレーニングになりそうです。

First, I turn the soil with the shovel,

Every week we water them and pull up lots of weeds.

How our pumpkin seeds grow underground:

1 Each seed is planted one inch deep in the soil.

2 After several days, a root grows downward.

3 A stem starts to grow root hairs take in nutrients to help the plant grow.

4 The stem grows upward inside the tip, seed leaves are tightly curled. The shell of the seed is left behind.
