英語絵本「It’s a George Thing!」の読み聞かせ、シマウマのジョージとゆかいな仲間たちの登場する楽しいイラストの絵本です。
この絵本のキーワードとなっているのがthing。
thingはモノとか事といった意味で使われることが多いですが、その他にも所有物を表す意味もあります。ここでは名前の後に～thingsとなっているのでジョージ風とかジョージ流のような感じかな、と思います。「バスケと言えばピーチそのものだよ」といった感じでしょう。
George had two best friends.
ジョージには2人の親友がいました。
Peachy and Moon
ピーチとムーンです。
Every morning, George went to Peaches house to play Big Ball.
毎朝、ジョージはビッグボールをするためにピーチの家に行きました。
Playing Big Ball was it Peachy Thing.
ビックボールで遊ぶことはピーチそのものでした。
It was the thing Peachy likeed best.
ピーチが最も好きなことでした。
Georgia was a very good at it.
ジョージはとても得意でした。
Every afternoon, George went to Moon’s house to play Rocks.
午後はいつも、ジョージはムーンの家へ岩遊びをしに行きました。
Playing Rocks was a Moon Thing.
岩遊びはムーンそのものでした。
It was the thing Moon like best.
ムーンが最も好きなことでした。
George didn’t understand it.
ジョージはそれが理解できなかった。
One day, when George was walking home from Moon’s house, he heard a new sound coming from Priscilla’s River Boat.
ある日、ジョージがムーンの家から帰ってきたとき、彼はプリシラのリバーボートから聞こえてくる新しい音を聞いた。
Priscilla was playing a guitar.
プリシラはギターを弾いていました。
And when she began singing,
そして彼女が歌い始めた時
George did this!
ジョージはこれをしました！
“You’re really good dancer, George,” said Priscilla.
「本当にダンサーだよ、ジョージ」とプリシラは言った。
“I’m putting you in my Show tonight.
「今夜、あなたを私のショーに入れます。
It’s at 7 o’clock. Don’t be late!”
７時です。 遅刻しないでください。」
George had to hurry to get ready…
ジョージは準備をするために急がなければなりませんでした…
..but it took ages to find something to wear.
しかし何か着るものを見つけるのにたっぷり時間がかかった。
Then he checked the time.
それから彼は時間を見た。
“I’m late” yelled George.
「遅れる」とジョージは叫んだ。
On his way to the show,
ショーに行く途中、
George saw Peachy and Moon looking for him,
ジョージはピーチとムーンが彼を探しているのを見た、
so he hid where they would never look.
それで彼は彼らが決して見えない場所に隠れた。
He didn’t think his friends would understand.
彼は友達が理解するとは思わなかった。
When George finally arrived at the show,
ジョージがついにショーに到着したとき、
he had a surprise.
彼は驚いた。
It looked like the whole jungle was there!
ジャングルがまるごとあったように見えました！
George felt very nervous.
ジョージはとても緊張した。
But when Priscilla began to sing..
しかしプリシラが歌い始めたとき..
George did this!
ジョージはこれをしました！
and this!
そしてこれ！
and this!

George was having so much fun!
ジョージはとても楽しんでいました！
But then…
しかしその後…
George froze.
ジョージは凍った。
Everyone was staring at him.
みんな彼を見つめていた。
He had never felt so alone.
彼は一人でそう感じたことは一度もなかった。
Priscilla was still singing, but George could not move.
プリシラはまだ歌っていたが、ジョージは動くことができなかった。
Then suddenly there was someone beside him.
それから突然彼のそばに誰かがいました。
And another someone.
そして他の誰か。
It was peachy and Moon!
ピーチーとムーンでした！
“I’m not very good at this” pulled Peachy.
「私はこれがあまり得意ではない」とピーチーは引っ張った。
“I don’t understand it!” huffed Moon.
「わかりません」 と息を切らせながらムーン
“I don’t even know what it is.”
「私はそれが何であるかさえ知りません」
George grinned. i
ジョージは笑った。
“It’s a George thing!” he said and he showed his friends how to do it.
「ジョージだよ」 彼は言った、そして彼はそれをする方法を彼の友人に見せました。
From then on, George still went to Peachy’s house to do Peachy Things.
それ以来、ジョージはまだピーチのものをするためにピーチの家に行きました。
And he still went the Moon’s house to do Moon Things.
そして彼はまだムーンのことをするためにムーンの家に行きました。
But sometimes they all got together to do…
しかし時には彼ら全員が一緒に集まった…
