英語絵本「Hey Boy」の読み聞かせ、一匹の犬と男の子の物語です。
犬との出会いに大喜びした少年は、いつも夢中になって一緒に遊んでいました。しかし、ある時少年は怪我をしてしまいます。犬と遊ぶには早すぎると言う理由で、その犬は少年が成長するまで施設に預けられることになってしまいます。
大好きだった犬との別れ、そして時が過ぎ、再び会う時を描いた絵本です。
One morning, a boy met the dog.
ある朝、一人の男の子が犬に出逢った。
“Hey, boy. Do you want to see my house?”
「ねぇ、私の家を見たいですか？」
That night, the boy told the dog about the adventures they would have and the games they would play.
その夜、その少年は犬に冒険についてと彼が持っているゲーム遊びについて話しました。
They couldn’t wait to get started.
彼らは始めるのを待つことができませんでした。
They played and played like crazy…
彼らは狂ったようにあそびました…
until the boy got hurt.
その少年がけがをするまで。
“You’re not ready to take care of a dog.” his mom said.
「あなたは犬の世話をする準備ができていません。」 彼のお母さんは言った。
“Maybe when you’re grown up.”
「たぶんあなたが成長したときに」
“Don’t worry, Boy. I have a plan.
「心配しないで、計画があります。
I’m going to grow up faster than anybody!” said the boy.
私は誰よりも早く成長するつもりだ！」とその少年は言った。
“You won’t be at the shelter long.”
「あなたは収容所に長くいることはありません。」
“Stay, Boy.”
「ここにいて」
For more than a month, the boy tried to grow up as fast as he could.
一ヶ月以上もの間、その少年はできるだけ早く成長しようとしました。
But in the meantime…
しかし、その間に…
the boy missed the dog so much, he decided it was okay to visit.
その少年はその犬にとても会いたかったので、彼は訪問してもいいと決心した。
But his friend was gone. Adopted.
しかし彼の友達はいなくなった。養子になった。
For a while the boy didn’t know what to think.
しばらく少年は何を考えるべきかわからなかった。
He felt sad.
彼は悲しかった。
Until an old fashioned letter arrived in the mail.
昔ながらの手紙が郵便に届くまで。
His friend was on an adventure, living somewhere the boy had never been.
彼の友人は冒険中で、その少年がかつて行ったことのないどこかに住んでいました。
“Hey boy! You’re getting so big!”
「やあ、君はとっても大きくなっている！」
They played and played like they had when they first met, until they were both exhausted and needed to rest.
疲れきって、休む必要があるまで、初めて会った時のように、彼らは遊んで、遊びました。
“When I finish growing up,” the boy told the dog.
「私が成長し終わったときに」、少年は犬に言いました。
“we’ll live on a farm.”
「農場に住むよ」
“And you can run around every day chasing sheep.”
「そして羊を追いかけて毎日走り回ることができる」
“I made my own lunch today, so it won’t be much longer.”
「今日は自分で昼食を作ったので、もうこれ以上長くはならないでしょう」
Time passed.
時は過ぎた。
The boy tried harder than ever to grow up.
その少年は今まで以上に成長しようとした。
He wanted to tell his friend everything.
彼は友達にすべてを伝えたかった。
The boy visited whenever he could.
彼は可能な限りいつでも訪問した。
“I biked here,” he told a dog.
「私はここで自転車に乗った」と彼は犬に言った。
“I also research dog food, and the best kind can be eaten by both of us.”
「私はドッグフードについても研究しています、そして私たち二人で最高の種類を食べることができます。」
“But I haven’t tried it…”
「でも試したことがない」
Sometimes a while pass between visits.
時々、訪問の間、時が過ぎます。
The dog was older now.
その犬は今、年を取った。
They didn’t run around a play as much as they used to.
彼らは昔ほど走り回っていませんでした。
“Don’t worry, Boy.” the boy whispered at the end of one visit.
「心配しないで、」 その少年はある訪問の終わりにささやきました。
“I still love you.”
「私はまだあなたを愛しています。」
More time passed.
もっと時間が経った。
Some days were bad.
何日かは悪かった。
Other days were good.
他の日は良かった。
Sometimes nothing seemed to make sense.
意味があるように見えないこともありました。
Sometimes it did.
時々それをしました。
But he never stopped missing his friend.
しかし彼は彼の友人を見逃すことを決して止めなかった。
The boy had done it – grown-up.
その少年は成し遂げた。成長した。
But he visited less and less.
しかし彼はますます訪れなくなった。
Then one day there was news.
それからある日、ニュースがありました。
The couple was no longer young enough to take care of the dog.
その夫婦はもう犬の世話をするのに十分なほど若くはなかった。
At first the boy didn’t know what to think.
最初、少年は何を考えるべきかわからなかった。
He sat down.
彼は座った。
Where would his friend live?
彼の友人はどこに住んでいますか？
But he knew the answer, and it made him happy.
しかし、彼は答えを知っていた、そしてそれは彼を幸せにした。
Ready or not, he was going to bring the dog home.
準備ができているかどうかに関係なく、彼は犬を家に持ち帰るつもりでした。
The boy drove and drove…
少年は車を走らせた。。
When he arrived, he felt nervous.
彼が到着したとき、彼は緊張しました。
Even afraid.
でも怖い。
What if he doesn’t recognize me?

Will he wag his tail?

What if he barks?

“Hey boy!” His friend moved very slowly now.
「ねぇ！」彼の友人は今とてもゆっくり動いた。
He couldn’t see very well.
彼はあまりよく見えなかった。
But, of course, the dog was happy.
しかし、もちろん、犬は幸せでした。
And the boy was overjoyed.
そしてその少年は大喜びしました。
“Thank you,” he said.
「ありがとう」と彼は言った。
So the boy told his friend about the adventures they would have.

And a games they would play and play and play.
