英語絵本「George’s Energy Adventure」の読み聞かせ動画のご紹介です。この絵本はアメリカのSTEAM教育向けの絵本。街のエネルギーについてブロックで街を構築しながら学ぶお話です。
英文はアメリカの小学校低学年向けに書かれており、難しい表現もなく英語初心者にとってもリスニングしやすい内容となっています。少し文章は長いですが、流し聞きにちょうどよい絵本でした。

Today was the big day.
今日は大事な日だった。
This was what George had been looking forward to
ALL summer!
これはジョージが楽しみにしていたものだった

“George, hurry up!” his mom called upstairs.
「ジョージ、急いで！」母親が2階で呼びました。
“We’ll be late to Edison’s Inventors Camp.”
「エジソンの発明家キャンプに遅刻しちゃうわ」
Nothing could be better than hanging out with friends while learning about science.
科学について学びながら、友達と一緒に過ごすことほど素晴らしいことはない。
This year they were exploring energy.
今年はエネルギーについて学んでいました。
“Hello, inventors I’m miss Megawatt.”
「こんにちは、発明家の皆さん、メガワットが恋しいです。」
“Mega-what?” said the girl next to George.
「メガ何？」 ジョージの隣の女の子が言った。
“Mega-watt,”said the camp leader.
「メガワット」とキャンプリーダーは言いました。
“I’m a bundle of energy in a short amount of time!
「私は短時間でエネルギーの塊になります！
Let’s get going!”
さあ行こう！」
This year your project is something you will ALL love!
今年のプロジェクトは、みなさんが大好きなものです。
You are going to build your own city!
自分の街を作るのです!
But, you must keep the lords on by using what you learned about energy.”

The girl next to George jumped out of her seat in excitement and said, “I know a kind of energy that runs all the time no matter what the weather is like!”

“Don’t short circuit, Marie,” said Ms. Megawatt,
“Cool down and listen”

“You will be using building blocks to make a city where your children will live someday,” Ms. Megawatt explained.
「ブロックを使って、いつか自分の子どもたちが住む街を作るのです」とメガワットさんは説明します。
The children giggled with glee. “Remember that all cities need energy.
子供たちはにっこりと笑いました。 「すべての都市にはエネルギーが必要であることを忘れないでください。
They need a lot of energy!

They need it all the time – every hour, every day.”

George knew exactly what to do. He began to build.

“Do you want to work as a team?” Marie asked.

“No I’m already going to make the best city ever.
I don’t really need your help,” said George.

“Are you using nuclear energy? I learned that it’s great for big cities!” Marie explained happily.

George said impatiently.

“My parents have solar panels in our house.

That is all anyone needs,”
それだけで十分なんだ。
Block after block, George added houses, stores, and solar panels.
ブロックごとに、ジョージは家、店舗、ソーラーパネルを追加しました。
He soon ran out of blocks for all the solar panels he needed for his city. Cities need a lot of energy!
彼はすぐに、彼の街に必要なすべてのソーラー パネルのブロックを使い果たしました。 都市は多くのエネルギーを必要としています！
George was stuck. He tried and tried.

He could not build enough energy for his
city.

Frustrated, he knocked his city down and stormed off to bed.

George opened his eyes and saw a strange city.

Looking up and down, and all around, George heard a warm, friendly voice.

“Hi George, my name is Sunny. I heard you created this city! Come meet everyone that keeps this place running.”
「こんにちはジョージ、私の名前はサニーです。あなたがこの街を作ったと聞きました。この場所を運営しているすべての人に会いに来てください。」
Curiously, George followed Sunny into the familiar city. As clouds began to drift across the sky, Sunny slowed to a stop.
ジョージは不思議に思いながら、サニーを追って見慣れた街へと入っていった。空には雲が流れ始め、サニーはゆっくりと足を止めた。
“I’m sorry. I’m starting to feel really sleepy.” Sunny said.
“ごめんね。すごく眠くなってきたんだ。” サニーが言った。
“Go on without me. I’ll just rest here a bit.”
“私なしで行ってください。私はここで少し休むから”
Before George could say, sweet dreams, Sunny was sleeping soundly.
ジョージが「いい夢見ろよ」と言う前に、サニーはぐっすり眠ってしまった。
With a strong gust of wind came another voice.
強い風と共に、別の声が聞こえてきた。
“Looks like you could use some help I’m wendy.
“どうやらお困りのようですね。
Allow me to show you around!”
ご案内しましょう
George “oohed” and “aahed” as he walked through the streets.
ジョージは通りを歩きながら、「うーん」「あー」と声を上げた。
This was what his city was meant to be!
これこそ、彼の街が目指すものだったのだ。
As they went further into the city,
二人はさらに街へ入っていった。
Wendy eased to a halt.
ウェンディが立ち止まりました。
“Sorry, George. There’s less wind here, and I cannot move another inch.
「ごめんね、ジョージ。ごめんね、ジョージ。ここは風が弱いから、これ以上動けないわ。
I’ve gone as far as I can go.
もう、行けるところまで行ってしまった。
You can meet my friends in that diner ahead.”
この先のダイナーで友達に会えるよ。」
George pushed open the diner door and heard a loud chomping coming from a nearby table,
ジョージは食堂のドアを押し開けると、近くのテーブルから大きな音を立てているのが聞こえた。
He sat down. “My name is coal!”
彼は座った。”俺の名前はコールだ！”
Coal said between bites.
コールは一口食べる間に言った。
“And I’m Gassy.” Gassy burped before continuing his meal.
「そして、私はガッシーです。」ガッシーは食事を続ける前にゲップをした。
“Do you two also get tired?” George asked.
「お二人もお疲れですか？」 ジョージは尋ねた。
Coal shook his head and continued to eat.
コールは首を振って食べ続けました。
Gassy replied, No, we’re always here whenever you need us!”
ガッシーは答えた、「いや、俺たちはいつでも必要なときにここにいるんだ！」。
“Except if the buffet runs out!” coal added.
「ビュッフェが無くなったら別だけどね！」コールが付け加えた。
“Mmmm,” George said as he took the last bite of his dinner.
He waited, but Gassy and Coal just kept eating and eating.
「うーん」ジョージは夕食の最後の一口を食べながら言った。
彼は待ったが、ガッシーとコールは食べ続けた。
Just as they finished one plate, another took its place.
一皿食べ終わると、また一皿。
“Wow! You two must be hungry!” George said.
「うわっ！お腹空いたでしょ！」 ジョージは言った。
“You betcha! We have to eat this much so we can work hard all the time.” replied Coal.
「そうだろう？これだけ食べれば、ずっと頑張れるよ」とコールが答えました。
Tired of waiting, George said, Goodbye!”
待ちくたびれたジョージは、「さようなら！」と言った。
George wandered out of the city.
ジョージは街をさまよった。
In the distance, he saw a blue glow on the horizon.
遠くに、地平線に青い光が見えた。
As George approached, he saw an atom!
ジョージが近づくと、原子が見えました！
“Hei, I’m nuke,” said that adam.
「ねえ、私は核だ」とそのアダムは言った。
George asked, “Why are you all the way out here by yourself?”
ジョージは、「どうして一人でここまで来たの？」と尋ねました。
“Well, people are a little scared of me.
「まあ、人々は私を少し怖がっています。
So I work out here,” Nuke said.
だから私はここでワークアウトします」とヌークは言いました。
“But I’m a really great neighbor!”
「しかし、私は本当に素晴らしい隣人です！」
The sun set, and the wind stilled.
太陽が沈み、風が静まった。
The diner closed for the night.
食堂は夜の営業を終えた。
“Een when my friends get hungry or sleepy,

I keep supplying energy to the city!”

Nuke started dancing with his new friend.

George twirled round and round.

George woke up with a start as he fell out of bed
ジョージはベッドから転げ落ちると、はっと目を覚ました。
”Eureka!” he yelled as he left up from the floor.
“ユーレカ！”と叫びながら、床から離れました。
“Cities can’t work with just one form of energy.
「都市は1つのエネルギーだけでは機能しない。
It’s best to have them all!”
全部持っているのが一番いいんだ!」
George ran to find marie Marie.
ジョージはマリー・マリーを探しに走った。
“Marie! Marie!” George shouted,
“マリー！マリー！” ジョージは叫びました。
“I was wrong. We have to work together! I tried,
“俺が間違ってた 私たちは一緒に仕事をしなければならないのです! 努力はした。
but I can’t do it without you!”
でも君なしではできないんだ！”
George and Marie work together to build a bigger, better city.
ジョージとマリーが協力して、より大きな、より良い街をつくります。
“That’s wonderful, children!
「素晴らしいね、子どもたち。
Your teamwork has empowered you and your city,” said Ms.Megawatt.
あなたのチームワークが、あなたとあなたの街に力を与えたのです。」メガワットさんは言いました。
“The wind and the sun provide renewable energy,”
“風と太陽は、再生可能なエネルギーを提供します。”
Ms. Megawatt continued.
メガワットさんは続けます。
“Coal and natural gas run all the time no matter the weather.
「石炭と天然ガスは天候に関係なく常に稼働しています。
Nuclear is always on providing clean energy.
原子力は常にクリーンなエネルギーを供給しています。
Having diversity helps achieve success!”
