英語絵本「Firefighter Pete」の読み聞かせを翻訳してみました。
ピートシリーズの絵本は、子供にもとっつきやすいイラストで英語も読みやすくて英語学習のための絵本読み聞かせにぴったりな絵本です。
allowとarrowの違い
消防士さんがピートたちに消防服を着るのを許可するシーン、allowには、ある事を「よろしい」と受け入れる意味合いがあります。訳としては、(…の)入るのを許可する、(…の方向へ)許す、許す、させておく、可能にする、与えると辞書にはありますが、よく似た単語に矢を表すarrowがあり、こちらと混同してしまいそうですね。
allowの発音は al・low アラウ
arrowの発音は ar・row アロー
“We are going on a class trip today,” says Principal Nancy.
「今日はクラス旅行に行きます」とナンシー校長は言います。
She leads the class to a bright yellow bus.
彼女はクラスを明るい黄色のバスに導きます。
Everyone climbs on board.
誰もが乗ります。
“I wonder where we are going,” says Pete.
「私たちはどこに行くのだろうか」とピートは言います。
They are going to visit the firehouse today!
彼らは今日、消防署を訪問する予定です！
The bus parks next to the bright red firehouse.
バスは真っ赤な消防署の隣に停車します。
Pete and his classmates are excited.
ピートと彼のクラスメートは興奮しています。
The firehouse is huge! It’s so big it can hold two long, red fire trucks and all the firefighters equipment.
それはとても大きいので、2台の長い赤い消防車とすべての消防士の装備を収納できます。
The firefighters show the kids around.
消防士は子供たちを案内します。
They give everyone a turn to ring the old brass fire bell outside of the firehouse.

Then all the kids take turns sliding down the firefighter’s pole.

Callie yells as she glides down.

The firefighters allow kids to try on their gear.

First pete puts on the heavy black overalls.

Then he steps into the tall black boots.

A firefighter helps Pete put on the heavy yellow jacket.

Finally, they place a hard black helmet on Pete’s head.

All this gear is very heavy. Pete can barely move!

The firefighters allow the kids to explore one of the fire trucks. Callie sits in the driver’s seat. She presses the horn.
BRRRRT!

It’s so loud that all the kids cover their ears.
あまりの音の大きさに子供たちは耳を塞ぎます。
Then Pete turns on the sirens and lights. The sirens blare.
Woooo-eeeee! woooo-eeeee!
そして、ピートがサイレンとライトを点灯させます。サイレンが鳴り響く。
うぉーいー！うぉーいー！
The lights flash red and yellow.
ライトは赤と黄色に点滅する。
Suddenly, a loud bell rings in the firehouse. Uh-oh! It’s the fire alarm. There’s a fire in town!
突然、消防署に大きなベルが鳴り響く。おおっと！？火災報知器だ。町で火事が起きたんだ。
“Gear up, Pete!”
“準備だ、ピート！”
The firefighters scramble into their gear very quickly.
Pete puts on his gear, too.
消防士たちは、とても素早くギアに身を包んだ。
ピートも装備を身につける。
They all climb aboard the fire truck and turn on the sirens and lights, firefighter Pete and the firefighters are on their way!
みんなで消防車に乗り込み、サイレンとライトを点灯させると、消防士ピートと消防士が登場します。
Woooo-eeeee! woooo-eeeee!
うぉーいー！うぉーいー！
The fire engine races through town and the lights flash round and round.
消防車が街を疾走し、ライトがぐるぐると点滅する。
A firefighter presses the horn.
消防士がクラクションを鳴らす。
BRRRRT!
ぶるるる！
All the other cars move out of the way.
他の車がすべて道をあける。
There’s the fire! It’s hot and loud but the firefighters know exactly what to do. They work together as a team to connect the fire truck to the fire hydrant.
火事だ！暑くてうるさいけど、消防士は何をすればいいかよく分かっています。消防車と消火栓をつなぐために、チームで協力し合います。
Then the firefighters also attach a long heavy hose to the truck Firefighter Pete gives the signal and firefighters turn on the water. Woosh!
そして、消防士もトラックに長く太いホースを取り付ける 消防士ピートの合図で、消防士が放水する。ウォーッ!
The water gushes out very fast. Several firefighters must hold the hose to control it. Pete helps direct the hose as they spray the fire as water.
水が勢いよく噴出する。数人の消防士がホースを持ち、コントロールしなければならない。Peteはホースの向きを変えながら、火に水をかけている。
The fire is starting to go out there is smoke everywhere.
火は消え始めているが、そこらじゅうに煙が立ち込めている。
Suddenly, Pete hears yelling from the roof.
突然、Peteは屋上から叫び声を聞く。
Oh no It’s grumpy toad he needs to be rescued,
やばい、グランピー・ヒキガエルだ、助けなきゃ。
The firefighters raise a long ladder from the truck. Crank crank, crank. The ladder goes up and up and up.
消防士がトラックから長いハシゴを上げる。クランククランク、クランク。はしごは、どんどん上がっていく。
Firefighter Pete and another firefighter help. Grumpy toad climb down the ladder carefully.
Yay! The fire is out and everyone is safe!
消防士Peteともう一人の消防士が助ける。不機嫌なヒキガエルは、慎重にハシゴを降りていきます。
やったー 火は消え、みんな無事です。
The firefighters drive back to the firehouse. They take off all their gear.
消防署に戻った消防士たち。彼らはすべての装備を脱ぎます。
They pat Pete on the back and say! “Good job Pete!”
彼らはピートの背中を叩いて言う！”よくやったピート！”
Firefighter Pete helped save the day!
消防士ピートはその日を救ったのです！
