英語絵本「Not Quite Narwhal」の読み聞かせです。海の奥深くイッカク達に囲まれて生まれ育ったケルプは、他のイッカク達と似たような角を持ってはいましたが、泳ぎも下手で他にもどこかみんなと違う子でした。ある時、陸近くまで流されたケルプは丘の上に自分によく似た姿を目にします。
イッカクは北極海域に棲む長い角を持った体長５ｍほどの生物。この角が中世ヨーロッパにもちこまれユニコーン伝説の素となったと言われているそうです。
この絵本ではそんなイッカクとユニコーンの交わりがファンタジーに描かれていました。
Kelp was born deep in the ocean.
ケルプは海の奥深くで生まれました。
He knew early on that he was different from the other narwhals.
彼は他のイッカクとは違うことを早くから知っていました。
His tusks wasn’t as long as everyone else’s.
彼の角は他の皆の角ほど長くはありませんでした。
He had different tastes and food.
彼は異なる味と食べ物を持っていました。
and he wasn’t a very good swimmer.
そして、彼はあまり良いスイマーではありませんでした。
But his friends didn’t seem to mind, so kelp decided he wouldn’t either.
しかし、彼の友人は気にしなかったので、ケルプは彼もそうしないと決めていました。
That is, until he was swept away by a strong current.
つまり、彼が強い流れに流されてしまうまでです。
I wish I was a better swimmer!
もっといいスイマーになればいいのに！
Kelp found himself at the surface, closer to land than he’d ever been before.
ケルプは、以前よりも陸地に近い表面にいることに気付きました。
High up on a cliff he spotted a mysterious sparkling creature.
崖の上で、彼は神秘的な輝く生き物を見つけました。
It looks so familiar. It looked like… kelp!
とても馴染みがあります。 ケルプのように見えた！
Kelp swam toward land as fast as he could,
ケルプはできるだけ速く陸に向かって泳ぎ、
which wasn’t very fast at all,
まったく速くありませんでした
hoping that he can catch up with the creature that looked just like him.
彼が彼のように見える生き物に追いつくことができることを望んでいます。
When he finally reached the shore,
彼がついに岸に着いたとき、
Kelp felt a little bit anxious – he had never left the ocean.
ケルプは少し不安を感じた-彼は海を離れたことはなかった。
He was nervous about walking for the first time, but the land creatures made it look so easy!
彼は初めて歩くことに神経質でしたが、陸の生き物はそれをとても簡単に見せてくれました！
It wasn’t.
そうではありませんでした。
Eventually he got the hang of it.
最終的に彼はそれのこつを得た。
Everything on land was strange and beautiful – but also kind of scary.
土地のすべてが奇妙で美しいものでしたが、それはちょっと怖いものでもありました。
Kelp began to think he might never find the creature that looked just like him.
ケルプは、自分に似た生き物を見つけることができないと考え始めました。
But as he stumbled out of the forest.
しかし、彼が森の外に出たとき。
Land Narwhals!
陸のイッカク！
Actually, we’re unicorns.
実際、私たちはユニコーンです。
And, by the looks of it, so are you!
そして、その見た目で、あなたもそうです！
Kelp had never heard of unicorns before.
ケルプはユニコーンのことを聞いたことがありませんでした。
They taught him all sorts of new things about his tusk.
彼らは彼の角についてあらゆる新しいことを教えてくれました。
We call them horns! Wow!
私たちはそれらをホーンと呼びます！
they introduced him to new unicorn delicacies, and they showed him how to gallop.
彼らは彼に新しいユニコーンのごちそうを紹介し、駆け足で進む方法をおしえました。
There was no doubt that Kelp was, in fact, a unicorn.
実際、ケルプがユニコーンであったことは間違いありません。
He was having so much fun that he didn’t want to leave.
彼はとても楽しかったので、去りたくありませんでした。
But then he remembered all of his friends under the sea.
しかし、その後、彼は海の下で彼の友人全員を思い出しました。
Kelp missed them terribly,
ケルプはひどくそれらが恋しかった、
so he said goodbye to the unicorns and returned to the ocean.

When he finally arrived, Kelp had butterflies in his stomach.

おかえりなさい
Kelp took a deep breath and told his friends the news.
ケルプは深呼吸をして、彼の友人にそのニュースを話しました。
It turns out.. I’m not a narwhal !
わかった..私はイッカクではない！
of course you aren’t.
もちろんそうではありません。
I’m in unicorn!
私はユニコーンの仲間です！
We all knew that.
みんな知っていました。
They took it quite well.
彼らは、じょうずにそうしました。
Kelp was happy to be home,
ケルプは家にいられて幸せでした、
but now that he’d experienced life on land with the unicorns,
しかし今、彼はユニコーンと一緒に陸上での生活を経験したので、
he couldn’t seem to forget them.
彼はそれらを忘れることができなかったようです。
Did you want to be a land narwhal with the unicorns.
ユニコーンと一緒に陸のイッカクになりたいと思いましたか。
or a sea unicorn with her narwhal?
またはイッカクと海のユニコーン？
Kelp couldn’t decide.
ケルプは決定できませんでした。
But then he realized that maybe..
しかし、その後、彼は多分それを実現しました。
just maybe…

he didn’t have to choose.
