英語絵本「Mother’s Day」の読み聞かせです。
Mother’s Dayはそのまま「母の日」ですね。母への感謝を表す日です。
アメリカの子供たちも日本と同じように、母の日を前にしてお母さんへ感謝の気持ちを込めてプレゼントを考えたり一緒に過ごすプランを計画します。
絵本の子供達も、ひとりひとりがいろんな計画をサークルタイムで発表していきます。みんなそれぞれ個性的な母の日を過ごすようですね。
この絵本を読んだら、子供も「何かしたいな！」と思うかもしれません。後半にはボタンとペーパークラフトでつくるお花の作り方も紹介されていました。
アメリカや日本では5月の第2日曜日が母の日とされています。2018年は5月13日（日）です。
“Eveline, what are you going to do at school today?”
「エブリン、今日あなたは学校で何をするつもりですか？」
Maman asked me.
ママは私に尋ねた。
“I can’t tell you.” I said.
「話すことができません。」私は言った。
“That’s a secret!”
「それは秘密！」
At school, Nicholas and I walked down the hall together.
学校で、ニコラスと私は、一緒にホールを歩いて来ました。
He said, “Hey Eveline!
彼は、言いました。「ねえ、エブリン！
Did you remember to bring one?”
あなたは、あれを持ってくるのを忘れないでいましたか？」
I nodded and showed him my shiny gold button.
私はうなずいて、彼に私の光る金のボタンを見せました。
“Mine’s yellow with red stripes,” he said.
「私の黄色いのは赤い縞模様だ」と彼は言った。
At circle time, Mrs. Madoff said,
サークルタイムに、マドフさんは言いました、
“What holiday will we celebrate this Sunday?”

“Mother’s Day!” we shouted.
「母の日！」私たちは叫んだ。
“Good, Did everyone remember to bring a button?” she
asked.

Everyone had.

“Eveline, how will your family celebrate Mother’s Day?” asked Mrs. Madoff.

“My maman will be very happy!” I said.

“My big brother will come home from college.

He and Papa will make beignets and I’ll roll them in powdered sugar.

We won’t let Maman help because Sunday is her special day.”

“Mom and I are hiking to the top of Chickasaw mountain,” said Jessica.

“Dad and I are going to give Mom the birdhouse we built .

It has a tiny hole,” Evan said.

“The hole is tiny so that only wrens can fly in or out.

“My mother died when I was a baby,” Sarah said.

“Dad and I live with Grandma, who’s his mother.

She does everything for me that mothers do.

On Mother’s Day, dad and I will take her to a restaurant that has the kind of food her mom cooked.

Pablo said, “Last week, my father was bulldozing.
パブロは、言いました。「先週、父はブルドーザーをしていました。
Suddenly he saw a little dogwood tree.
突然、彼は小さいハナミズキの木を見ました。
He stopped his bulldozer just in time.
彼は、ちょうど間に合うようにブルドーザーを止めました。
He dug it up, roots and all, and put it in our garage.
彼はそれを掘り起こして根っことすべてを我々のガレージに置きました。
On Mother’s Day we’ll plant it in our yard!

That little dogwood tree sure will make my mother happy!”

“We’re not doing anything for Momma on Mother’s Day.” said Charlie.

“Instead she is throwing a baby shower for her twin sister, Aunt Louisa.

Kate tucked the violin under her chin, picked up the bow, and played.

“I practiced my piece every day.” she said, as soon as we’d finished clapping.

Michiko said, “My mother is tired of only looking at pictures she draws.

So my father and I decided the best gift we could give
her was an all-day trip to the biggest museum in the city .”

“On Mother’s Day, we’re going shopping at the mall for a new kitchen table.

I took all the money off my piggy bank.” Sam said.

“Don’t forget me!” said Nicholas.

“My mom loves animals, but all we have is a goldfish.

You know what? She’s getting a puppy for Mother’s Day ! I picked him out.”

Mrs. Madoff said it was time to make Mother’s Day presents.

A lady I never saw before came into our classroom.

“Boys and girls,” said Mrs. Madoff.

“Here’s Annie! She’s my mom.

We started with the circle of construction paper.
私たちは丸い工作用紙ではじめます。
Next we cut petals from tissue paper and glued them all
around the circle. That made a flower.
次に、ティッシュペーパーから花びらを切り取り、それらをすべて円の周りに接着した。それは花を作った。
Then we glued our buttons in the center of each tissue paper flower.
それから、各ティッシュペーパー花の中心にボタンを貼り付けました。
Finally we cut out leaves. We glued them to fuzzy pipe cleaners.

When we glued the pipe cleaners to the flowers, our flowers had leaves and stems!

My pink and red rose with its shiny gold center was the most beautiful thing in the world!

That’s what Maman said.

She loved the rose in the beignets that I brought to her on Mother’s Day.
