今日ご紹介する「Little Red Riding Hood」は、誰もが知っている赤ずきんちゃんの物語を、マイク・ゴードンが美しく鮮やかに描いた絵本です。先日のインターナショナルスクールOWISでも紹介されていた絵本です。今回は、この絵本を通して、お子さんと一緒に英語のリスニングを楽しみましょう！

お話の内容

むかしむかし、明るい赤いマントとフードを身につけた優しい女の子がいました。みんなはその子を「赤ずきんちゃん」と呼んでいました。

ある日、赤ずきんちゃんのお母さんは、具合の悪いおばあちゃんに野菜スープを届けてほしいと頼みました。お母さんは「道から外れないこと」と「オオカミと話さないこと」という森のルールを守るよう注意しました。

赤ずきんちゃんは元気よく出発しましたが、途中で花を摘んだり、小鳥のさえずりを聞いたりしているうちに、うっかりオオカミとぶつかってしまいました。

赤ずきんちゃんは無事におばあちゃんの家にたどり着けるでしょうか？そして、おばあちゃんはスープを美味しく食べられるでしょうか？

Once upon a time there was a kind little

She always wore a bright red cloak with a bright red hood.

Little Red Riding Hood lived with her mother on the edge of some deep dark woods.

One day, Little Red Riding Hood’s mother gave her a pot of vegetable soup.

“Take this to your grandmother,” she said.
「これをあなたのおばあちゃんに持って行きなさい」と彼女は言いました。

“She’s not feeling well.”

“But remember the rules of the woods,” her mother added.

“I will,” promised Little Red Riding Hood as she set off.
「そうします」と赤ずきんちゃんは約束して出発しました。

At first, the sun shone and the birds sang.
最初は、太陽が輝き、鳥たちは歌っていました。

Aha! There goes my lunch!
あっ！私のランチが行くぞ！

Little Red Riding Hood hummed a little tune…
赤ずきんちゃんは小さな曲をハミングしていました…

bent down to tie her shoelace…
靴紐を結ぶためにしゃがみ込み…

skipped along the path…
道をスキップして…

and stopped to smell the flowers.
花の良い香りをかいで立ち止まりました。

At last!
ついに！

“Good morning, Little Red Riding Hood,” caught a woodcutter.
「おはよう、赤ずきんちゃん」と木こりが声をかけました。

Rats!
しまった！

“Good morning,” said Little Red Riding Hood, waving to him.
「おはようございます」と赤ずきんちゃんは彼に手を振って答えました。

“I know I’ll run ahead and wait for her.”
「彼女に先回りして待とう」

Little Red Riding Hood walked deeper and deeper into the woods…
赤ずきんちゃんは森の中へどんどん奥深く歩いて行きました…

It grew darker and darker.
森はどんどん暗くなっていきました。

Then the sun hid behind the clouds and it got darker still.
そして太陽は雲の後ろに隠れて、さらに暗くなりました。

Come on, lunch. Where are you?
早く来い、ランチ。どこにいるんだ？

So Little Red Riding Hood didn’t see the wolf waiting for her on the path.
そのため赤ずきんちゃんは、道で彼女を待っているオオカミに気づきませんでした。

And the wolf didn’t see Little Red Riding Hood either.
そしてオオカミも赤ずきんちゃんに気づきませんでした。

Oops!
しまった！

My tail!
私の尻尾！

Little Red Riding Hood stepped on the wolf’s tail…
赤ずきんちゃんはオオカミの尻尾を踏んでしまいました…

Then on its paw…
それから足の裏を…

My paw!
私の足！

And dropped her basket smack! on his head.
そして彼女のバスケットをドスン！とオオカミの頭に落としてしまいました。

My head!
私の頭！

“Look where you’re going,” said the wolf huffily.
「行く先を見ろ」とオオカミはぶっきらぼうに言いました。

“But you were in the middle of the path,” said Little Red Riding Hood.
「でもあなたは道の真ん中にいたのよ」と赤ずきんちゃんは言いました。

She had forgotten the rule don’t talk to wolves.
彼女はオオカミと話さないというルールを忘れていました。

“What have you got in the basket?” ask the wolf hungrily.
「バスケットの中には何が入っているんだ？」とオオカミは腹ペコで尋ねました。

“Vegetable soup,” replied Little Red Riding Hood.
「野菜スープよ」と赤ずきんちゃんは答えました。

“I’m taking it to my grandmother.”
「おばあちゃんに持っていくのよ」

“Vegetables?” cried the wolf. “How revolting!”
「野菜？」とオオカミは叫びました。「なんて気持ち悪いんだ！」

“Wolves only eat juicy, red meat. I never touched vegetables,” he added.
「オオカミはジューシーな赤い肉しか食べないよ。野菜なんて絶対口にしたことがないんだ」と彼は付け加えました。

Now time for my lunch!
さあ、ランチの時間だ！

The wolf was about to gobble up Little Red Riding Hood but then he had an idea.
オオカミは赤ずきんちゃんを丸呑みにしようとしていましたが、それから彼はある考えを思いつきました。

“Perhaps I can eat Little Red Riding Hood
and her grandmother!” he thought.
「もしかしたら赤ずきんちゃんと彼女のおばあちゃんを両方食べることができるかもしれない！」と彼は考えました。

He put on his softest voice. “Where does your grandmother live?”
he asked.
彼は最も優しい声で「あなたのおばあちゃんはどこに住んでいるんだ？」と尋ねました。

“In the cottage on the other side of the woods,” said Little Red Riding Hood.
「森の向こう側にある小屋よ」と赤ずきんちゃんは答えました。

“How perfect!” thought the wolf, rubbing his tummy.

“How delicious!”

“Why don’t you take her some flowers,”
he suggested.
「おばあちゃんに花を持って行ってあげたらどうだい」

“That’s a lovely idea!”

What a kind wolf you are,” said Little Red Riding Hood.
「なんて優しいオオカミなの」と赤ずきんちゃんは言いました。

So, Little Red Riding Hood left the path
to look for flowers…
そこで、赤ずきんちゃんは花を探しに道から外れていきました…

and the wolf raised off to the grandmother’s house.
そしてオオカミは急いでおばあちゃんの家へ向かいました。

He knocked lengthy on the door. Tap! tap! tap!
彼は長くドアをノックしました。トントン！トントン！トントン！

I’m so wonderfully wicked and clever!
私はなんて素晴らしく悪賢くて賢いんだ！

“Who’s there?” ask the grandmother.
「誰かいるの？」と、おばあちゃんは尋ねました。

“Your granddaughter, Little Red Riding Hood,”
squeaked the wolf.
「あなたのお孫さん、赤ずきんちゃんよ」
とオオカミは甲高い声で答えました。

“I’ve brought tea, some lovely vegetable soup.”
「お茶と、美味しい野菜スープを持って来たわ」

“Let yourself in,” said the grandmother.
「入ってきなさい」とおばあちゃんは言いました。

“I’m too weak to get up.”
「起き上がるのが辛いわ」

The wolf lived into the room.
オオカミは部屋に入っていきました。

He gobbled up Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother.
彼は赤ずきんちゃんのおばあちゃんを丸呑みにしました。

Mmm. Bony, but not bad.
うむ。骨ばっているけど悪くない。

Then he climbed into bed to wait for Little Red Riding Hood.
それから彼はベッドに寝転がって赤ずきんちゃんを待ちました。

Soon he heard a knock at the door.
すぐに彼はドアをノックする音が聞こえました。

“Who’s there? he said.
「誰かいるの？」と彼は言いました。

“Your granddaughter, Little Red Riding Hood,”
「あなたのお孫さん、赤ずきんちゃんよ」

“Let yourself in.” called the wolf.
「入ってきなさい」とオオカミは呼びました。

“I’m too weak to get up.”
「起き上がるのが辛いわ」

He pulled on the grandmother’s cap and hid under the blankets.
彼はおばあちゃんの帽子をかぶり、毛布の下に隠れました。

“I’ve brought you some vegetable soup,” said Little Red Riding Hood.
「野菜スープを持って来たわ」と赤ずきんちゃんは言いました。

“Lovely.” snarled the wolf.
「いいね」とオオカミはうなり声をあげました。

“I mean lovely!” he added in the squeak.
「いや、いいね！」と彼は甲高い声で付け加えました。

“Put the basket on the stool and come and say next to me.”
「バスケットを椅子の上に置いて、私の隣に来て」

Little Red Riding Hood looked at her grandmother.
赤ずきんちゃんは、おばあちゃんを見ました。

She looked again.
彼女はもう一度見ました。

“Oh, grandmother,” she said.
「あら、おばあちゃん」と彼女は言いました。

“what big ears you have.”
「なんて大きな耳なの」

“All the better to hear you with,” said the wolf.

Little Red Riding Hood came closer to the bed.

“Oh, grandmother,” she said,

“Ah, the better to see you with,” said the wolf.

Little Red Riding Hood came closer still.

“what big hairy hands you have.”

“All the better to hug you with,” said the wolf.

Little Red Riding Hood was now standing right next to the bed.

“But, Grandmother,” she cried,

“All the better to eat you with,” snapped the wolf.

He jumped out of bed and gobble up Little Red Riding Hood.

Delicious!

“Full at last!” he said, licking his lips.

Then he lay down on the bed to sleep.

As the wolf slept, he snored…very loudly.
オオカミが眠ると、彼はイビキをかきました…とても大きく。

He snored so loudly the woodcutter heard him.
彼はとても大きくイビキをかいたので、木こりがそれを聞きました。

“I’ve never heard the old woman snore that loudly,” he thought.
「老婦人がこんな大きくイビキをかいたことはなかった」と彼は思いました。

“I’ll just make sure she’s okay.”
「大丈夫かどうか確かめてみよう」

But the woodcutter couldn’t see the grandmother anywhere – only a very fat wolf.
しかし、木こりはおばあさんの姿が見当たらず、太った狼しか見えなかった。

“Oh, no!” thought the woodcutter.
「おや、まずい！」と木こりは思った。

“The wolf’s eaten the old woman.”
「狼がおばあさんを食べてしまったんだ。」

Just then, the woodcutter had an idea.
そのとき、木こりはあることを思いついた。

“Perhaps the old woman is still inside you.
「もしかしたら、おばあさんはまだあなたの中にいるかもしれない。

I might be able to save her.”
私が助け出せるかもしれない。」

He picked up some scissors, Then he snapped open the wolf’s tummy.
彼はハサミを手に取り、狼のお腹を切り開いた。

“Snip, snip..”
「チョキチョキ…」

He saw a bright red hood.
彼は明るい赤い頭巾を見つけた。

Snip, snip…Little Red Riding Hood’s head popped out.
チョキチョキ…赤ずきんちゃんの頭が飛び出してきた。

Phew!
ふう！

“Keep cutting!” she cried.
「切り続けて！」と彼女は叫んだ。

“Grandmother’s still in there.”
「おばあちゃんがまだ中にいるわ。」

Snippety – snip.faster and faster…
チョキチョキ、どんどん速く…

The woodcutter kept cutting until Grandmother popped out too.
木こりは切り続け、おばあさんも飛び出してきた。

“Did I fall asleep?”
「私、寝てしまったの？」

Quick as a flash, Little Red Riding Hood ran outside and picked up a lot of stones.
素早く、赤ずきんちゃんは外に走り出て、たくさんの石を拾ってきた。

The woodcutter put them in the wolf’s
tummy
木こりはそれらを狼のお腹に入れた

and the grandmother sewed the tummy up.
そしておばあさんがお腹を縫い合わせた。

Then the wolf woke up.
そして狼が目を覚ました。

He tried to sneak out of the door, but
the stones rattled inside him.
彼はこっそりドアから出ようとしたが、中の石がガラガラと音を立てた。

“Now, everyone can hear you coming,”
said the wolfcutter laughing.
「今や、みんながあなたが来るのが分かるわね」と木こりは笑って言った。

“But, I’ll never catch anyone,” cried wolf.
「でも、僕はもう誰も捕まえられないよ」と狼は泣き叫んだ。

“Exactly,” said the woodcutter.
「その通りだ」と木こりは言った。

“You’ll just have to eat vegetables instead,” said Little Red Riding Hood.
「代わりに野菜を食べるしかないわね」と赤ずきんちゃんは言った。

The wolf never ate another person.
狼は二度と人を食べることはなかった。

I don’t like little girls!
「僕は女の子が嫌いだ！」

As for Little Red Riding Hood, she never
ever talked to a wolf again.
赤ずきんちゃんも、二度と狼と話すことはなかった。

Little Red Riding Hood was first written
down by two brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, about 200 years ago.
赤ずきんちゃんの物語は、約200年前にヤーコブとヴィルヘルムのグリム兄弟によって初めて書き記された。

The Grimm brothers lived in Germany and
liked collecting lots of very grim stories.
グリム兄弟はドイツに住んでおり、たくさんの物語を集めるのが好きだった。
