英語絵本「Danny the Duck with No Quack」の読み聞かせです。
アヒルのダニーはNo Quack（クワックワッと鳴かない）とっても無口な子でした。おしゃべり好きなみんなの声掛けにもなにも返す言葉が見つかりません。
面白い話題でもあれば話せるかも・・と、ダニーは話題探しに出掛けることにしました。
そこで出くわしたtricky looking foxes（油断のならないずる賢そうな）2匹のキツネ。ダニーは声を出せないままキツネたちの言う通りに働かされてしまいます。ですが、無口なダニーはおバカさんではありません。その場を上手にすり抜け、みんながびっくりするような話題を持ち帰ることに・・。
文中の後半に出てくる否定疑問文aren’tは、通常の疑問文とは少しち違ったニュアンスですね。
aren’t ~ 日本語にすると、（～だよね、～なのかな ～じゃない？）といった感じでしょうか。

Every morning, the ducks and the hens gather in the yard for a good gossip.
毎朝、アヒルとめんどりは、良いうわさ話のために庭に集まります。
“How’s the quack, Danny?” ask the chicken.
「調子はどう？ダニー」 鶏めんどりは尋ねた。
“What’s the story? Tell us the news.”
「どんなお話しがある？ニュースを教えてください。」
But Danny’s a shy little duck, and he never knows what to say.
しかし、ダニーは恥ずかしがり屋の小さなアヒルです。彼は何を言いたいのか分かりません。
He keeps his beak firmly shut, bowss his head and turns away.
彼は彼のくちばしをしっかりと閉じたまま、お辞儀をするとくるりと回った。
“Come on, Danny!” squawk the birds one day.
「さあ、ダニー！」と、鳥はある日大声で騒ぎます。
“Don’t be such a scaredy quack! There must be something you can tell us!”
「そんなに怖がりにならないで！わたしたちに何か話せることがないといけません」
Danny swallows and open his beak – but nothing counts out.
ダニーは呑み込んでくちばしを開きます しかし、なにも出てきません。
Not a peep, not a splutter, not a cackle, not a hoot.
鳴き声も、しゃべり声も、クワックワッもホ～もありません。
He’s lost his quack!
彼は鳴き声を失ってしまいました。
Right, thanks Danny, that’s it.
そう、ダニー ありがとう。
And he takes off up the lane to find a tail worth telling.
そして、彼は、話す価値があるものを見つけるため、通路を立ち去ります。
Yes, he wanders up the track to find his quack.
はい、彼は鳴き声を見つけるためにわだちの上を追跡します。
He waddles along and waddles along, till he meets two scrawny foxes.
彼は、2匹のやせこけたキツネに会うまで、よたよた前へよたよた歩きます。
This thing’s heavy!
このものは重いです！
Who’ll help us carry it?
私たちがそれを運ぶのを誰が手伝いますか？
That duck!
あのアヒル！
And Danny knows he shouldn’t – these are tricky looking foxes.
そして、ダニーは彼がそうしてはならないということを知っています－これらは慎重を要するキツネに見えます。
He opens his beak to say that he won’t.
彼はそうならないためにくちばしを開きます。
But nothing comes out.
しかし何も出てきません。
“We’ve carried it far enough,” groans one fox. “Now who’ll collect the wood?”
「私たちはそれを遠くからもう十分に持ってきました。」一匹の狐がうめいた。「今、誰が木を集めるの？」
“The duck with no quack,” sniffs the other.
「鳴かないアヒル」別のものがクンクン嗅ぎながら言った。
And Danny knows he shouldn’t – these are hungry looking foxes. He opens his mouth to say no.
そして、ダニーは彼らが飢えている狐だと分かり、そうすべきではないことを知っています。
“Now who’ll fill the pot with water?” ask one Fox.
「今、誰が鍋に水を満たしますか？」一匹の狐がたずねた。
“The duck with no quack,” smirks the other.
「鳴かないアヒル」他のものは笑いながら言った。
And Danny knows he shouldn’t –
そして、ダニーは彼がそうすべきではないことを知っています –
these are scary-looking foxes.
これらは恐ろしい狐です。
He opens his beak as wide as he can, and what does he say?
彼は彼のくちばしをできる限り広く開き、彼は何か言いますか？
Nothing.
何もない。
“Now who’ll be the dinner?” say one fox, licking his lips.
「今誰が夕食になるの？」 1匹のキツネが唇をなめながら言った。
“The duck with no quack!” cries the other, jumping up.
「鳴かないアヒル！」 他のキツネは叫び、飛び跳ねた。
They rush towards Danny they’re just about to grab him, when…
彼らはダニーに向かって急いで彼を捕まえるつもりです。
“Quackity – quack! it’s a duck attack!” squawks Danny.
“クワッキティ – ガーガー！アヒルに攻撃だ！” ダニーは大声で叫びます。
He throws himself to the side of the pot.
彼は、ポットの側面に身をかわします。
The two foxes are so surprised, they tumble right inside!
2匹のキツネはとても驚きます、彼らは待っただ中に転落します！
“How’s the quack, Danny?” asked the other ducks, when he rushes back to the farmyard.
ダニー、調子はどう？ 彼が農場に急いで戻ったとき、他のアヒルが尋ねた。
“Yeah, what’s the cluck, duck?” ask the hens.
「よう、どうだい？コッコッ」めんどりが尋ねた。
And aren’t they all amazed to hear Danny quacking?
そして、彼ら全員は、ダニーがギャーギャーいっているのを聞いて驚いたのなんの。
Aren’t they all astonished at the tale he has to tell?
彼が伝える話に彼らはすべて驚いているんじゃない？
“I wandered down the track and I met a pair of foxes…”
「小道を徘徊し、私は一組のキツネに会った…」
“They were carrying a pot, and I knew they wanted to cook me..”
「彼らは鍋を持っていて、私は彼らが私を料理したいと思った。」
No!
まぁ！
“They made me gather wood…”

“I had to fetch some water…”
「私は水を取らなければならなかった…」

“I filled the pot with water… and guess who’s in it now?”

“The Foxes!”
「キツネたち！」
“Go away!” cluck the angry hens.
「どこかに行って！」 鶏はコッコッと怒った。
“And don’t come back!” quack the ducks.
「そして戻ってくるな！」 アヒルが鳴いた。
And Danny’s quack is the loudest.
そして、ダニーの鳴き声は一番大きなものです。
“Quackity – quack!” he says. “Don’t come back!”
“クワックティック – クワックワッ！” 彼は言う。 「戻ってくるな！」
QUACK!
