英語絵本「Curious George Visits the Zoo」おさるのジョージの読み聞かせです。
日本語絵本のタイトルは「おさるのジョージ どうぶつえんへいく」
黄色い帽子のおじさんと動物園へやってきたジョージは、いつものようにいたずらっぷりを見せながらも、機転を利かせて皆を笑顔にしてくれます。
文中の英語は短めに書かれていて、お話の流れもわかりやすいので初級向けにもちょうどいい英語絵本でした。
“George,” said the man.
“How would you like to see a real elephant?
Let’s go to the zoo.”

動物園へいきましょう
There was a lot to see at the zoo.
動物園には見るべきことがたくさんありました。
There were the giraffes, with their necks so long they seemed to reach the sky.
キリンがいましたが、彼らの首はとても長く空に達するようでした。
There were the kangaroos carrying their babies in a special pocket.
特別なポケットに赤ちゃんを運ぶカンガルーがいました。
And finally there were the elephants with their floppy ears and their long trunks munching on hay.
そして最後に、干し草の上で音をたてて食べているだらりとした耳の象がいました。
It was lunchtime.
昼食時でした。
People were eating on the park benches and picnicking on the grass.
人々は公園のベンチの上で食べていて、草の上でピクニックしていました。
“I am going to find out what time they feed the lions,” said the man with the yellow hat.
「私は、彼らがいつライオンに餌をやるか見に行ってくるよ」と、黄色の帽子の男は言いました。
“Wait here and don’t get into trouble.”
「ここで待ってください、そして、トラブルに巻き込まれないでください。」
While George was waiting, he saw a zookeeper with a pail of bananas for the monkeys.
ジョージは待っている間、猿のためのバナナの手桶を持つ動物園の飼育係に会いました。
The keeper put the pail down to get a drink at the water fountain.
飼育員は、水飲み器で飲物を得るために手桶を置きました。
George was hungry.
ジョージはお腹がすいていました。
He grabbed the pail and ran away with it.
彼は手桶をつかんで、それとともに逃げました。
“Hey!” shouted the keeper.
「おい！」飼育員が叫びました。
“Stop that monkey!”
「とまれそのサル！」
But George kept on running.
しかしジョージは走り続けた。
A crowd of people was standing near the monkey house – just the place for George to hide!
人々の群衆はサルの家の近くに立っていた – ジョージが隠れるぴったりな場所！
Standing by the cage was a little boy holding a red balloon with a long string.
おりのそばに立っているのは、長い紐の赤い風船を握っていた少年だった。
Suddenly one of the monkeys reached out, snatched the string from the boy’s hand,
突然、サルのうちの一匹が手を伸ばし、少年の手から紐を奪い取った。
and ran to the top of the cage.
そして、おりの最上部に向って走りました。
Then he tried to squeeze the balloon through the bars.
それから、彼は棒に風船を絞り込もうとしました。
The other monkeys started to shriek and scream.
その他のサルたちは、鋭い音を出して叫び始めました。
The little boy was crying.
小さい男の子は泣いていました。
“Please, couldn’t somebody get his balloon back?” asked the mother.
「お願いします、どなたか彼の風船を取り戻すことはできないでしょうか？」と、母は尋ねました。
None of the people could reach that high.
人々の誰も、その高さに達することができませんでした。
But George knew what to do!
しかし、ジョージは、何をするべきかについてわかっていました！
With the pail in his hand, he climbed up to the top of the cage.
手桶を手に持ち、彼はおりの最上部に登りました。
He took a few bananas and fed them to the monkeys.
彼は2、3のバナナをとって、猿たちにそれを与えました。
While the monkeys were eating, George snatched the balloon and swung down from the cage.
猿たちが食べる間、ジョージは風船をうばい取って、おりから下にスイングしました。
He handed the balloon back to the boy.
彼は、男の子へ風船を手渡しました。
Everybody clapped and cheered.
誰もが拍手して、喝采しました。
Just then the man with the yellow hat came running.
ちょうどその時、黄色の帽子の男が走って来ました。
“George!” the man cried, “I have been looking all over for you!”
「ジョージ！」と、男は叫びました。「私は、ずっとあなたを探していました」
“Please don’t be angry with him,” said the mother.
「彼を怒らないでください」と、母は言いました。
“He saved my son’s balloon.”
「彼は、私の息子の風船を救いました。」
“George should not have taken my pail,” said the keeper, “but he did feed the monkeys.”
「ジョージは、私の手桶をとってはいけませんでした」と、飼育員は言いました。「しかし、彼は猿に餌をやりました。」
“And now it’s time to feed ourselves, George,” said the man.
「そして今、私たちの食事をする時間です、ジョージ」と、男は言いました。
And that’s what they did.
そして、それは彼らがしたことです。
