ハロウィーンシーズンにぴったりな、ちょっと不気味な英語絵本「Creepy Carrots」の読み聞かせです。
うさぎのジェスパーはニンジンが大好物。近くの畑にはシャキシャキのおいしいニンジンが沢山、しかもfree for the taking（自由に取ることができる）。このフレーズはフリーペーパーのスタンドなどでよく見かけますね。「ご自由にお取りください」といった意味。
でも、あまりに好きだからと言って採りすぎは良くないです。なにやら、もったいないおばけのような不気味なニンジンの影が忍び寄ることになります。
Jesper Rabbit had a passion for carrots.
うさぎのジェスパーはニンジンに情熱を持っていました。
And the carrots that grew in Crackanhopper Field were the best. Fat. Crisp. And free for the taking.
クラカンホッパーフィールドで成長したニンジンが最高でした。 丸々として。 しゃきしゃき。 そして、自由にとれる。
He pulled some for a morning snack on the way to school.
彼は学校に行く途中で朝の軽食のためにいくつかを引っ張った。
He yanked out a few on his way to Little League Practice.

He ripped them from the ground on his way home at night.

Jasper couldn’t get enough carrots…

… until they started following him.

He first noticed something strange after the big game against the East Valley Hares.

Jasper was about to help himself to a victory snack… when he heard it.

The soft … sinister… tunktunktunk of carrots creeping.

He turned… but there was nothing there.

Just my imagination, he thought.

But he hopped a little faster.

That night, as he was brushing his teeth… there they were.

Jasper whipped around.. but nothing.

He laughed at himself, picked his toothbrush off the floor, and went to bed … quickly.

The next morning he approached Crackenhopper Field slowly.
翌朝、彼はゆっくりクラッケンホッパーの畑に接近しました。
He reached for two wild carrots. Nothing happened.

He bit into one. Nothing happened.

Whew! Creepy carrots… It was ridiculous!
ひゃー！ 気味悪いニンジン… それはばかげていました！
But when he arrived home that evening…
しかし、彼がその晩に帰宅したとき…
“Mom! Mom!” Jasper screamed.
「ママ ママ！」ジャスパーは叫んだ。
“Creepy carrots! in the shed!”
「「気味悪いニンジン！小屋で！」
His mom opened the door slowly.
彼のママはドアをゆっくり開けました。
There weren’t any carrots. Not even the regular kind.
少しのニンジンもありませんでした。普通のものでさえ。
“There are no such things as creepy carrots,”
「そのような気味の悪いニンジンはありません。」
Mom said, shaking her head.

Later that night, as Jasper lay in bed, he heard it.
その夜の後、ジャスパーが床に伏していると、彼はそれを聞きました。
Breathing.
呼吸している。
Terrible, carroty breathing.
恐ろしい、ニンジンっぽい呼吸。
And there, on his wall!
そして、そら、壁に！
“Creepy carrots!” he shouted.
「気味悪いニンジン！」と、彼は叫びました。
“Dad Dad!”
「パパ パパ！」
His dad thumped into his bedroom and threw on the light.

They searched under the bed. No creepy carrots.

They looked through the closet. No creepy carrots.

They opened the dresser drawers. No creepy carrots.

“Just a bad dream, son,” his dad said, shaking his head. “Now go to sleep.”

That wasn’t going to happen.

By the end of the week

Jasper was seeing

Jasper knew his parents were wrong.

And they were coming for him!

But they couldn’t get him…

Jasper hatched a plan. First thing on Saturday, he grabbed supplies and headed to Crakenhopper Field.
ジャスパーは計画を準備しました。最初は土曜日に、必需品をひっつかんで、クラーケンホッパーの畑に向かった。
As the Sun finally set across Crakenhopper Field, Jasper Rabbit smiled.
太陽がクラーケンホッパーの畑を照らし終えた日没、うさぎのジャスパーは微笑んだ。
On his way home, there was no tunktunktunk.
帰り道、トンクトンクトンクはなかった。
There were no carrot-shaped shadows.
ニンジン形の影はありませんでした。
His plan had worked. No creepy carrots would ever get out of that carrot patch again.
彼の計画はうまくいきました。気味悪いニンジンは、決して二度とそのニンジン畑から出ません。
And as the Sun finally set, the Crakenhopper filled…
そして太陽が沈んだ後でさえ、クラーケンホッパーの畑は..
chaired! their creepy plan had worked.
議長をつとめます！彼らの気味悪い計画はうまくいきました。
They were sure of it.
彼らは、それに自信がありました。
Jasper rabbit would never get into that carrot patch ever again.
