英語絵本の読み聞かせ動画YouTubeのBeastie Toysチャンネルより、『Big red barn』という絵本のご紹介。広い農場の大きな赤い納屋に暮らす動物たちのおはなしです。
広大に広がる農場に建つ赤い納屋といえば、アメリカ的ではありますが、北海道でも同じような景色を見ることができます。とうもろこし畑などはどことなく親近感がわきます。
そんな農場に暮らす動物たちののんびりした穏やかな一日をえがいた絵本です。
邦題は『おおきなあかいなや』
未就学から小学低学年向けの絵本としてお馴染みの一冊ですね。
英語でも難しい単語はあまりないので小さなお子さんから楽しめると思います。ライミングもあり、テンポの良い読み語りを聴くことが出来ますよ。

By the big red barn in the great greenfield.
広い農場の大きい赤い納屋のそばで。
There was a pink pig who was learning to squeal.
キーキーと鳴くことを学んでいるピンクのブタが居ました。
There was a great big horse and a very little horse.
とても立派で大きい馬と、とっても小さい馬が居ました。
And on every barn is a weather vane.
そしてどの納屋の上にも風見鶏はあります。
of course — a golden flying horse.
もちろん、金の空飛ぶ馬です。
There was a big pile of hay and a little pile of hay.
大量の干し草と少しの干し草が山積みになっています。
And that is where the children play.
そしてそれは子どもたちが遊ぶところです。
But in this story the children are away.
しかし、この物語では子供たちは居ません。
Only the animals are here today.
今日ここには動物たちだけ。
The sheep and the donkey,
羊とロバ、
The geese and the goats,
ガチョウとヤギ
were making funny noises down in their throats .
達は、喉でおかしな音を鳴らしていました。
An old scarecrow was leaning on his hoe.
古いかかしは、彼のくわにもたれていました。
And a field mouse was born…
そして、野ネズミは生まれました
In a field of corn.
とうもろこし畑の中で。
Cockadoodle dooooo!
コケコッコー！
In the barn there was a rooster and a pigeon, too.
納屋の中にはおんどりとハトも居ました。
and a big white hen standing on one leg.
そして、一本足で立っている大きな白いめんどり
and under the hen was a quiet egg.
そしてそのめんどりの下にはそっと卵がありました。
There was a bantam rooster and a little bantam hen with a big clutch of eggs.
いくつもの卵と一緒にチャボのおんどりと小さなチャボのめんどりがいました。
Count them. There are ten.
それらを数えます。 10個ありました。

Mooooo! moo!
モーモー
There was a big brown cow
and a little brown cow.
大きい茶色の牛とちいさな茶色の牛がいました。
There was an old black cat.
年をとった黒毛の猫がいました。
Meow! Meow!
ニャーニャー
And a tiger tomcat.
そして、トラ雄猫。
yeow! yeow!
ヤウーヤウー
There was a big red dog.
大きな赤毛の犬がいました。
Bow! Bow!
バウバウ
with some little puppy dogs all round and warm.
まんまるで暖かいちいさな子犬達と。
and they all lived together in the big red barn .
そして、彼らみんな大きい赤い納屋で暮らしていました。
and they played all day in the grass and in the hay.
そして、彼らは一日中、芝生と干し草で遊びました。
When the Sun went down in the great green field, the big cow lowed, the little pig squealed.
太陽が雄大な農園に沈む時、大きな牛が吠え、小さなブタはキーキー鳴いた。
the horses stomped in the sweet warm hay,
馬は甘い暖かい干し草を足で踏み鳴らしました
and the little donkey gave one last bray.
そしてちいさなロバは最後の鳴き声を一声。
the hens were sleeping on their nests.
めんどり達は巣で眠っていました。
Even the roosters took a rest.
おんどりたちでさえ休んでいました。
The little black bats flew away out of the barn at the end of the day.
ちいさくて黒いコウモリたちは一日の終りに納屋の外へ飛び去りました。
and there they were all night long
そして、彼らは一晩中そこにいました
sound asleep
ぐっすりと眠って
in the big red barn.
大きな赤い納屋で
only the mice were left to play.
ネズミだけは残って遊んでいます
Rustling and squeaking in the hay.
干し草の中でカサカサ音を立ててキーキーなきながら
while the moon sailed high
月が高く登っている間
in the dark night sky.
