英語絵本「Are you my Mother?」の読み聞かせです。
英語を習い始めの小さなお子さんと一緒に親子で楽しめる絵本です。
鳥のヒナと言えば、最初に見たモノを母親だと思ってついていってしまう刷り込みが有名ですが、この絵本の赤ちゃん鳥はいろいろ尋ね歩きます。
Are you my Mother?の質問にいろいろなお返事が返ってきます。
でも、動物ではないショベルカーにまで尋ねるところがちょっとかわいいヒナ鳥さんでした。
ショベルカーの発した言葉、”Snort!”は、ちょっと不機嫌に「フン！」と鼻をならす感じ。
A mother bird sat on her egg.
母鳥が卵の上に座っていました。
The egg jumped.
卵が跳ねました。
“I must get something for my baby bird to
eat!” she said.
「私はひな鳥が食べるための何かを得る必要があります」彼女は言った。
So away she went.
それで彼女は離れて行った。
Inside the nest, the egg jumped.
巣の中で、卵は飛び跳ねた。
It jumped and jumped and jumped.
跳ねて、跳ねて、そして跳ねた。
Until… out came a baby bird!
ひな鳥が出てくる..まで
“Where is my mother?” he said.
「私のお母さんはどこ？」彼は言った。
He did not see her anywhere.
彼はどこにも彼女を見つけられなかった。
“I will go and look for her.” he said.

Out of the nest he went.

Down, down, down! Plop!

The baby bird could not fly.

But he could walk.

“Now I will go and find my mother,” he said.
「さぁ、行って母親を見つけるよ」と彼は言った。
“Are you my mother?”
「あなたは私のお母さん？」
the baby bird said to the ask a kitten.
ひな鳥は子猫に尋ねた。
The kitten just looked and looked.
子猫はただじっと見つめるだけだった。
It did not say a thing.

“Are you my mother?”
「あなたは私のお母さん？」
the baby bird asked a hen.
ひな鳥はニワトリに尋ねた。
“No,” said the hen.

“Are you my mother?”
「あなたは私のお母さん？」
the baby bird asked a dog.
ひな鳥は犬に尋ねた。
“I am NOT your mother. I am a dog,” said the dog .
「私はあなたのお母さんではありません。私はイヌです」と犬は言った。
“Are you my mother?”
「あなたは私のお母さん？」
the baby bird asked a cow.
ひな鳥はウシに尋ねた。
“How could I be your mother?”
「どうして私はあなたの母親になれますか？」
said the cow. “I am a cow.”
ウシは言った「私はウシよ」
The baby bird stopped to think.
ひな鳥は、考えるために止まりました。
The kitten and the hen were not his mother.
子猫と雌鶏は、彼の母でありませんでした。
The dog and the cow were not his mother.
犬と牛は、彼の母でありませんでした。
“I have a mother,” said the baby bird.
「私には、母がいます」と、ひな鳥は言いました。
“I know I do. I will find her. I will. I will!”
「私がすることはわかっています。彼女を見つけます。そうする。そうする！」
Just then the baby bird saw a big thing.
ちょうどその後、ひな鳥は大きなモノを見た。
“You are my mother!” he said.

The big thing said, “Snort!”

“Oh no!” said the baby bird.
「あれー！」ひな鳥は言った。
“You are not my mother.
「あなたは私の母親ではありません。
You are a scary Snort!”
あなたは怖いフンだ！」
The Snort lifted the baby bird up, up, up.
そのフンはひな鳥を上へ上へ上へと持ち上げた。
Then something happened.
それから何かが起こった。
The Snort put the baby bird right back in the tree.
フンはひな鳥を木の中に戻しました。
The baby bird was home!
ひな鳥は家にいました！
Just then the mother bird came back.
ちょうどそこへ母親鳥が帰ってきました。
“I know who you are,” said the baby bird.
「あなたが誰かわかります。」ひな鳥は言った。
“You are not a kitten or a hen or a dog.
「あなたは子猫やニワトリや犬ではない。
You are not a cow or a Snort!”
あなたは牛でもフンでもない！」
“You are a bird, and you are my mother!”
「あなたは鳥、そしてお母さん！」
