日本でも「ともがき」という絵本になっているお話です。

 

 

The Four Friendsとは、森に仲良く暮らす鹿、カメ、カラスとねずみたち。

ある日、鹿の姿が見えなくなってしまいました。

みんなで探していると・・・

罠にかかった鹿の姿。

森に暮らす、仲間思いの動物や鳥たちの物語です。

 

部分訳

The forest was home to four inseparable friends:
森は4匹の親友の家でした

a deer, a tortoise, a crow and a mouse.
鹿、カメ、カラスとねずみ。

Every evening they met
毎晩彼らは会っていた

to discuss the events of the day.
その日起こったことを話し合うために

 

the deer became very frightened.
鹿は、非常におびえていました

“Hunters are laying traps
「ハンターは、罠を仕掛けています

everywhere.
あちらこちらに

Is there anything we can do to escape?”
私たちが逃げるためにできることが何かありますか?」

 

the crow cried out,
カラスは叫びました

“As our friend the mouse knows!”
私たちと同じ友達のねずみは知っているさ!

The crow began telling everyone what he had seen.
カラスは彼が見たものをみんなに話し始めました。

 

“Just the other day,
「つい先日、

I saw the most amazing thing.
私は、最も驚くべきものを見ました。

A flock of doves got trapped
罠にかけられたハトの群れ

their wings flapping wildly.
激しくパタパタ動いている彼らの翼。

 

Then suddenly,
それから突然

all together,
一斉に

the doves picked up the net in their beaks
ハト達は彼らのくちばしでネットを持ち上げ

and flew into the sky.
空へ飛んでいきました。

 

where did they go?
彼らはどこへ行った?

straight to our friend the mouse!
ますっぐに私たちの仲間のネズミのところへ。

With his sharp teeth,
鋭い歯を持っている

he tore the net to pieces.
彼は、バラバラにネットを裂きます。

 

Free at last,
ついに自由

the doves flew away.
ハトは飛び去りました。

They were very grateful to our friend.”
彼らは、我々の友人に非常に感謝しました。」

 

After the story ended,
物語が終わったあと、

the deer went in search of water
鹿は、水を捜しに行きました

while the three friends started nibbling on the fruits, shrubs and leaves of the forest.
3人の友人が森の果物や灌木、葉をかじり始めていた間、

they chatted late into the night,
彼らは、夜遅くまでしゃべりました

still waiting of the deer to return.
鹿が帰ってくるまでじっと待っていた

But the deer was nowhere to be seen,
しかし、鹿はどこにも見当たりませんでした。

began to worry.
心配し始めた。

 

At dawn,
明け方

while the others called out to the deer,
他のものが大声で鹿を呼び続けていた間、

the crow flew in every direction
カラスはあらゆる方向へ飛びました

looking for her.
彼女を探すために

In a clearing,
ひらけた場所で

he spotted the deer
彼は鹿を見つけました

 

with her foot caught in a net.
彼女の足は網に掛っていた

“Don’t worry,”
「心配しないで」

he told her calmly.
彼は、静かに彼女に言いました。

The crow rushed back
カラスは急いで戻った

The tortoise had an idea:
カメには、考えがありました

“Mouse, hop quickly on the crow’s back.”
「ネズミ君、カラスの背中の上に速く飛び乗ってください。」

 

And they flew off to rescue the deer.
そして、彼らは鹿を救い出すために飛び去りました。

Without wasting time,
さっさと

the mouse bit through the net.
ネズミは網をかみ砕きました

 

Just then,
ちょうどその時

the anxious tortoise reached the spot.
心配した亀がそこへ到着した。

“Why did you come here?
「あなたはなぜここへ来た?」

If the hunter returns,
もしハンターが戻って来たら

you’ll never escape!”
あなたは決して逃げられません」

the deer exclaimed.
鹿は叫びました。

 

Hearing his footsteps,
彼の足音が聞こえてきた。

all of them ran away,
彼らはみんな逃げました

tied him to a stick.
彼を棒に縛りつけました。

 

Because of me, poor Tortoise is in trouble,
私のために、気の毒なカメは困っています。

Suddenly, the deer leaped up
突然、鹿は飛び上がりました

and ran to the pond
そして、池に向って走りました

 

near the path.
小道のちかくの

She lay down absolutely still,
彼女は横になり、微動だにしなかった

while the crow pecked at her.
カラスが彼女をつつく間。(死んだふり)

 

When the hunter dropped the tortoise
ハンターがカメを手放し、

and picked up the deer,
そして、鹿を拾いあげている間

quickly cut the cords
急いでコードを切り、

released the tortoise.
カメを救い出した。

 

While the tortoise slipped into the water,
カメが水の中に滑り込んでいる間、

the deer darted off
鹿は飛び去りました

crow simply flew away.
カラスは楽々飛び去りました。

 

The hunter trembled with fear.
ハンターは、恐れに震えました。

He had never seen an animal come back to life.
彼はこれまでに動物が生き返るのを見たことがありませんでした。

 

Thinking that the forest was haunted,
森のおばけが出たという思いで、

he ran for his life.
彼は必死に逃げた。
