英語絵本の読み聞かせ動画、今回は2015年アメリカで出版された絵本の中でベストワンに贈られるコルデコット賞金賞を受賞した作品『The Adventures of Beekle』です。
子供たちが想像する心の中のはるか遠くの島に暮らす主人公ビークル。
誰かが心に思い浮かべると、この島を離れて友達の心に住めるようになるのだけど誰もビークルのことを想像するものはいません。みんな他の興味でいっぱいです。
そこで、ビークルは待つのをやめて現実世界へ旅立つことにしました。
子供が失いつつあるファンタジーの心を描いた絵本ですね。人気作だけあって『The Adventures of Beekle』の読み聞かせ動画はユーチューブにたくさんアップされていました。
いろいろ公開されていた中で、絵本が見やすく聞きやすかったのがこちら。
視聴前に子供と日本語へ訳してみました。細かい所間違っていたらごめんなさい。
he was born on an island far away where imaginary friends
were created.
彼はみんなが想像して作るはるか遠くの島で生まれました。
Here they lived and played each eagerly waiting to be imagined by a real child.
ここで彼は本当の子供によって想像されるのを待ちながらしきりに遊び暮らしていた。
Every night he stood under the stars hoping for his turn to be picked by a real child and given us special name.
毎晩彼は、本当の子供に選択される順番を待って名前を与えられる希望を持って星の下に立っていました。
He waited from many nights.
彼はいく晩も待ちました。
But his turn never came.
しかし彼の順番はけっしてきません。
His mind filled with thoughts of all the amazing things that were keeping his friend from imagining him.
彼の心は彼の友人が彼を想像しないようにしている驚くような思いでいっぱいだと感じた。
So rather than waiting … He did the unimaginable.
それで、待つよりはむしろ・・彼は想像も及ばないことをしました。
He sailed through unknown waters and face many scary things.
彼は未知の海を楽々と渡り、そして多くの怖い事態に直面しました。
But thinking about his friend gave him the courage to journey on.
しかし、彼の友達のことを考えることは旅行する勇気を与えました。
Until he reached the real world.
彼が現実の世界に着くまで。
The real world was a strange place.
現実の世界は意外な場所でした。
No kids were eating cake No one stopped to hear the music And every one needed nap time.
子供はケーキを食べていなくて、誰も音楽を聞くために立ち止まらなく、そしてみんな昼寝の時間が必要だった。
Then he finally saw something familiar. So he followed.
それから、彼はおなじみの何かをようやく見ました。 それで、彼はあとに続きました。
Had a good feeling about this place.
この場所は心地よく感じた。
But he looked everywhere, and he could not find his friend.
しかし、彼はいたるところを見たけど、彼は友人を見つけることができませんでした。
He climbed to the top of a tree and looked out, wishing and hoping his friend would come.
彼は木のてっぺんまで登って眺めて、彼が来ることを希望を持って待ち望んだ。
But no one came.
しかしだれもこない。
He though about how far he’d come and how long he’d waited, and felt very sad.
でも彼は、どのくらい遠くから来てどのくらい待ったか、そしてとても悲しく感じた。
Then he heard a noise below. “Hello!”
そして彼は下の方から音を聞いた「こんにちは！」
Her face was friendly and familiar, and there was something about her that felt just right.
彼女の顔は友好的で親しみがあり、彼女がちょうど良いと感じた何かがありました。
At first, they weren’t sure what to do. Neither of them had made a friend before.
最初は、彼らは何をするべきかよくわかりませんでした。彼らのどちらも以前に友だちを作ったことがありません。
But …after a little while
しかし、 … ほんの少しの間の後
Beekle and Alice had many new adventures. They shared their snacks.
ビークルとアリスはたくさん新しい冒険をしました。彼らはお菓子を分け与えました。
They told funny jokes.
彼らはおもしろい冗談を言いました。
The world began to feel a little less strange.
世界が前よりすこし変でない感じがしてきた。
And together they did the unimaginable.
そして一緒に、彼らは想像も及ばないものをしました。
