英語絵本リトルクリッター・シリーズから「The Best Teacher Ever」の読み聞かせです。
リトルクリッターの通う学校ではもうすぐ”teacher appreciation day” と呼ばれる「教師の日」先生へ日頃の感謝の気持ちを込めてプレゼントを贈る日です。リトルクリッターは大好きなキティ先生に最高のプレゼントを贈ろうと考えます。
日本ではあまり馴染みのない記念日ですが、この教師に感謝する日はアメリカやヨーロッパ各地、東南アジアまで各国で祝われているポピュラーな記念日のようです。ちなみにアメリカでは5月の最初の週の始まる火曜日とされています。その日を含んだ一週間が Teacher Appreciation Weekとなり、先生へ感謝の気持ちを込めて教室を飾り付けたりプレゼントを贈ったりするそうです。
Miss Kitty is my teacher. She is the best teacher ever!
キティさんは私の先生です。彼女は最高の先生です！
She reads stories to us at storytime and makes them fun.
彼女はストーリータイムに私たちに物語を読んで楽しませます。
Sometimes she puts on a silly costume.
時々彼女は馬鹿げた衣装を着る。
She teaches math and makes it exciting.
彼女は数学を教え、それを刺激的にします。
Sometimes she brings special treats just for us.
時々彼女は私たちのためだけに特別なお菓子を持っています。
We go on field trips, and we sing songs on the bus.
私たちは遠足に行き、バスでうたを歌います。
When we went to the zoo, she told us all about the animals.
私たちが動物園に行ったとき、彼女は動物についてすべてを教えてくれました。
Did you know the elephants flap their ears to keep cool?

I wish I could do that.

I wanted to do something special for Miss. Kitty on teacher appreciation day.
私は先生の感謝の日にキティさんに特別なことをしたいと思っていました。
I asked Dad, “But what can I do?”
私はお父さんに尋ねた。「でも何ができるの？」
I went to Dad’s shop to make her something really special.
私は、彼女に本当に特別な何かを作るために、おとうさんの店に行きました。
Dad showed me all his tools. But using them looked too hard.
お父さんは私に彼のツールをすべて教えてくれました。 しかし、それらを使用することはあまりにも困難だった。
Later Mom took me to the mall. I found just the right present.
後でママは私をショッピングモールに連れて行った。 私はちょうどいいプレゼントを見つけた。
Mom said, “I don’t think Miss Kitty would really like a Robot critter-zilla.”
ママは言った、 「私はキティさんが本当にロボットのクリッターゴジラを望んでいるとは思わない。」
Probably no,t but I would. “Please Mom?” I asked.
おそらく、そうではないでしょう。 「お母さんお願い？」 私は尋ねた。
“No, Mom said.
「いいえ」ママは言った。
Then Mom said. “How about we bake her something?”
それからお母さんは言った。 「何か彼女に焼くのはどう？」
I like that idea.
私はそのアイデアが気に入った。
We drove home.
私たちは家に帰った。
Mom made my favorite cake for Miss Kitty. I helped.
ママはキティ先生に私のお気に入りのケーキを作った。私は手伝った。
I put my cake on the table in the front hall so I wouldn’t forget it in the morning.
私はフロントホールのテーブルの上にケーキを置いたので、朝それを忘れることはありません。
I was all set for teacher appreciation day.
私は教師の感謝の日のためにすべて準備していた。
I woke up early and ran downstairs. But my cake was on the floor.
私は早く目を覚まし、階下に走った。 しかし、私のケーキは床にあった。
The dog had eaten most of it.
犬はそのほとんどを食べました。
“I bet Miss Kitty would love a big bouquet of flowers,” said Mom.
「ミスキティは大きな花束が大好きに違いない」とママは語った。
She quickly cut a bunch from the garden.
彼女はすぐに庭からひと束を切りました。
The bus is almost here.”
Then she wrapped a ribbon around them.
それから彼女はそれらの周りをリボンでラップした。
“Here you go,” she said. “And hurry.
「さあ行って」と彼女は言った。「そして急いで。
The bus is almost here.”
バスはもうすぐそこ」
I ran out the front door with my bouquet of flowers for Miss Kitty.
私はミスキティの花束をもってフロントドアまで駆け出しました。
On the bus everyone had big presents in big boxes wrapped in pretty bows.
バスでは、誰もかわいらしく大きい箱に包まれた大きなプレゼントを持っています。
My present didn’t look so good.
私のプレゼントはそんなに良く見えなかった。
I hid it under my seat.
私は椅子の下に隠した。
I was almost to my classroom when I noticed that I forgot my flowers on the bus.
ほとんど私が教室に着いたとき、私はバスに花を忘れていることに気づいた。
The bus was leaving. Oh, No! What am I going to do now? I thought .
バスは出発していた。 あらいやだ！ 私は今何をしたらいい？ 私は思った。
I ran to the back of the classroom.
私は教室へ走って戻った。
I got out my drawing pad and I drew the quickest, best picture ever .
私は自分の絵画パッドを取り出して、そして大急ぎで今までで最高の絵を描きました。
When it was my turn, I walked up to the front of the class.
私の番が来た時、私は教室の前に歩き出た。
With everyone looking at me…
みんなが私を見ている・・・
..I gave my picture to Miss Kitty.
私は自分の絵をキティ先生にあげた。
She smiled then she put it up on her bulletin board. Mine was the only picture up there.
彼女は笑顔で彼女の掲示板に載せました。 私の唯一の絵がそこにあった。
What a great present…
なんてすごいプレゼント・・
for the best teacher ever.
