英語絵本「How to Catch a Star」の読み聞かせ動画、星を捕まえる少年のファンタジーなお話です。
絵本作家オリヴァー・ジェファーズのデビュー作になります。日本語タイトルでは「みつけたよ、ぼくだけのほし」として出版されていました。
手を伸ばせば届きそうな空に輝く星。少年は、なんとか自分だけのものにしたくてあれこれ試してみるのですが思うようには捕まえられません。ふと、目を下にやり水面を見るとちっちゃな赤ちゃん星がゆらゆらしているのを見つけます。
どこか違う星のお話しかな？と思うぐらいすこし不思議なイラストが印象的でした。
Once there was a boy and the boy loved stars very much.
かつて少年がいて、少年は非常に星を愛していました。
Every night the boy watched the stars from his window and wish he had one of his very own.
毎晩、少年は窓から星を見て、彼には自分のものをひとつ持っていたい願望があった。
彼は星がどのように彼の友達になるか、そして、かくれんぼをして遊ぶのを夢見た。
そして、一緒に遠方へ散歩に行く。
The boy decided he would try to catch a star.
He thought that getting up early in the morning would be best,
男の子は星をつかむことにした。 彼は朝早く起きるのが一番良いと思っていました
because then the star will be tired from being up in the sky all night.
それは星が一晩中空に浮かんで疲れるからです。
So, the next day he set out at sunrise.
だから、翌日、彼は日の出に出発した。
But he could not see a star anywhere. He sat down and waited for one to appear.
しかし、彼はどこにでも星を見ることができませんでした。彼は座って、出現するのを待った。
he waited.

and he waited.

and ate lunch.

and after dinner

he waited some more.

Finally just before the sun was about to go away. he saw a star.
太陽が沈みそうになる直前。彼は星を見た。
The boy tried to jump up and grab it.
少年は飛び跳ねてそれをつかむように試みた。
But he could not jump high enough.
しかし、彼は十分に高く飛ぶことができませんでした。
だから非常に慎重に彼が見つけることができる最も高い木の上に登った。
しかし、星は手の届かないところだった。
He thought he might lasso the star with the life belt from his father’s boat.
彼は、父親のボートのライフベルトで星を投げ縄で捕らえるかもしれないと思いました。
but it was much too heavy for him to carry.
しかしそれは彼が運ぶには重すぎました。
He thought he could fly up in his spaceship and just grab the stuff.
彼は自分の宇宙船で飛んで、ちょうどそのものをつかむことができると思った。
But his spaceship had ran out of petrol last. Tuesday when he flew to the moon.
しかし、彼の宇宙船はすでにガソリンを使い果たしました。彼が月に飛んだ火曜日。
perhaps he could get a seagull to help him fly up into the sky to reach a star.
おそらく、彼は彼が星に着くために空に飛び立つのを援助するカモメをつかまえることができました。
But the only seagull he could find didn’t want to help at all.
しかし、彼が見つけることができた唯一のカモメは、まったく助けたくないとおもった。
The boy thought he would never catch a star.

and just when he noticed something floating in the water
ちょうど彼が水に浮かんでいるものに気づいたとき
it was a prettiest star he ever seen.

just a baby star it must have fallen from the sky.

He tried to fish the star out with his hands.
彼は、手で星を釣りあげようとしました。
but he couldn’t reach it.

then he had an idea the star might wash up on the shore

He ran back along the jetty to the beach.

then he waited and walked
