Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot…

フーヴィルの街の誰一人残らず、みんなクリスマスが大好きでした…

But the Grinch,Who lived just north of Who-ville, Did not!

でも、フーヴィルのすぐ北に住んでいたグリンチは違いました！

The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!

グリンチはクリスマスが大嫌い！クリスマス・シーズンがまるごと大嫌い！

Now, please don’t ask why. No one quite knows the reason.

さあ、理由は聞かないでください。誰もその訳をはっきりとは知らないのです。

It could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right.

頭のネジがどこか一本、ちゃんと締まっていなかったのかもしれません。

It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.

あるいはもしかすると、靴が少しきつすぎたのかもしれません。

But I think that the most likely reason of all

でも、一番ありそうな理由はと言えば

May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.

彼の心臓が、人より二回りも小さかったことではないでしょうか。

But Whatever the reason, His heart or his shoes,

でも理由が何であれ、心臓だろうと靴だろうと、

He stood there on Christmas Eve, hating the Whos, Staring down from his cave with a sour, Grinchy frown

彼はクリスマスイブにそこに立ち、フーたちを憎みながら、不機嫌でグリンチらしいしかめ面をして洞窟から見下ろしていました。

At the warm lighted windows below in their town.

街のふもとにある、温かな明かりの灯った窓を。

For he knew every Who down in Who-ville beneath was busy now hanging a mistletoe wreath.

彼は知っていたのです。ふもとのフーヴィルのフーたちが、今まさにヤドリギのリースを飾るのに忙しくしているのを。

“And they’re hanging their stockings!” he snarled with a sneer.

「やつらは靴下を吊るしているぞ！」彼はあざけるように鼻を鳴らしました。

“Tomorrow is Christmas! It’s practically here!”

「明日はクリスマスだ！もうすぐそこじゃないか！」

Then he growled, with his Grinch fingers nervously drumming,

それから彼は唸り声をあげ、グリンチの指をイライラと叩かせながら言いました。

“I must find some way to stop Christmas from coming!”

「クリスマスがやってくるのを、何とかして止めなければならん！」

For tomorrow, he knew…

なぜなら明日になれば、彼にはわかっていました…

…All the Who girls and boys would wake bright and early.

…フーの女の子も男の子も、みんな朝早くに目を覚ますのです。

They’d rush for their toys!

そしておもちゃ目がけて駆け寄るのです！

And then! Oh, the noise!

するとどうでしょう！ああ、あの大騒ぎ！

Oh, the noise! Noise! Noise! Noise!

ああ、うるさい！騒がしい！やかましい！喧々囂々！

That’s one thing he hated!

それこそが、彼がもっとも嫌っていたことでした！

The noise! Noise! Noise! Noise!

あの騒音！喧騒！大騒ぎ！ドタバタ！

Then the Whos, young and old, would sit down to a feast.

それから老いも若きもフーたちは、ご馳走を囲んで席につくのです。

And they’d feast! And they’d feast!

そして食べる、食べる！

And they’d feast! Feast! Feast! Feast!

そして食べる、食べる、食べる、食べる！

They would feast on Who-pudding and rare Who-roast-beast

フー・プリンと、とびきりのフー・ロースト・ビーストに舌鼓を打つのです。

Which was something the Grinch couldn’t stand in the least!

それはグリンチにとって、これっぽっちも我慢ならないことでした！

And then they’d do something he liked least of all!

そして彼らは、彼がもっとも嫌いなことを始めるのです！

Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small, Would stand close together, with Christmas bells ringing.

フーヴィルの街の誰もが、背の高いのも低いのも、クリスマスの鐘が鳴り響く中、肩を寄せ合って立つのです。

They’d stand hand-in-hand. And the Whos would start singing!

彼らは手を取り合って立ち、そしてフーたちが歌い始めるのです！

They’d sing! And they’d sing! And they’d sing! Sing! Sing! Sing!

And the more Grinch thought of this Who-Christmas-Sing,

The more the Grinch thought, “I must stop this whole thing!

思わずにはいられませんでした。「こんなことは、もう一切やめさせなければならん！」

“Why, for fifty-three years I’ve put up with it now!

「なんと、もう53年もの間、私はこれに耐えてきたのだ！」

I must stop this Christmas from coming!.. But how?”

「クリスマスがやってくるのを止めなければ！…だが、どうやって？」

Then he got an idea! An awful idea!

そのとき、彼はある考えを思いつきました！恐ろしい考えを！

The Grinch got a wonderful, awful idea!

グリンチは、素晴らしくも恐ろしい考えを思いついたのです！

“I know just what to do!” The Grinch laughed in his throat.

「どうすればいいか、わかったぞ！」グリンチは喉の奥で笑いました。

And he made a quick Santa Claus hat and a coat.

そして彼は手早くサンタクロースの帽子と上着を作りました。

And he chuckled and clucked, “What a great Grinchy trick!

彼はクスクス、ケラケラと笑いました。「なんて素晴らしいグリンチ風の策略だ！」

With this coat and this hat, I look just like St. Nick!”

「この上着とこの帽子をかぶれば、どこから見ても聖ニコラウス（サンタ）そっくりだ！」

“All I need is a reindeer…”

「あとはトナカイさえいれば…」

The Grinch looked around. But since reindeer are scarce, there was none to be found.

グリンチはあたりを見回しました。しかしトナカイは滅多にいないので、一頭も見つかりませんでした。

Did that stop the old Grinch…?

それで年老いたグリンチが諦めたでしょうか…？

No! The Grinch simply said, “If I can’t find a reindeer, I’ll make one instead!”

いいえ！グリンチはただこう言いました。「トナカイが見つからないなら、代わりに作ってしまえばいい！」

So he called his dog, Max.

そこで彼は、飼い犬のマックスを呼びました。

Then he took some red thread and he tied a big horn on the top of his head.

それから赤い糸を取り出し、マックスの頭の上に大きな角を縛り付けました。

Then he loaded some bags and some old empty sacks on a ramshackle sleigh and he hitched up old Max.

それからボロボロのソリに、いくつかのバッグと空の古い袋を積み込み、マックスを繋ぎました。

Then the Grinch said, “Get up!” and the sleigh started down toward the homes where the Whos lay a-snooze in their town.

All their windows were dark. Quiet snow filled the air.

どの窓も暗く、静かな雪が空を舞っていました。

All the Whos were dreaming sweet dreams without care when he came to the first little house on the square.

フーたちがみな、悩みもなく甘い夢を見ている中、彼は広場に面した最初の小さな家にたどり着きました。

“This is stop number one,” the old Grinchy Claus hissed

「ここが一番目の停留所だ」老いたグリンチ・クロースは低い声で言いました。

And he climbed to the roof, empty bags in his fist.

そして彼は、空の袋を握りしめて屋根へと登りました。

Then he slid down the chimney.

それから煙突を滑り降りました。

A rather tight pinch.

かなりの窮屈さでした。

But, if Santa could do it, then so could the Grinch.

ですが、サンタにできることなら、グリンチにもできるはずです。

He got stuck only once, for a moment or two.

ほんの一、二回、体が引っかかっただけでした。

Then he stuck his head out of the fireplace flue where the little Who stockings all hung in a row.

それから暖炉の煙道から頭を出すと、そこにはフーたちの小さな靴下が一列に並んで吊るされていました。

“These stockings,” he grinned, “are the first things to go!”

「この靴下たちが、」彼はニヤリと笑いました。「最初になくなるものだ！」

Then he slithered and slunk, with a smile most unpleasant, around the whole room and he took every present!

それから彼は、この上なく不快な笑みを浮かべながら部屋中を這い回り、プレゼントを一つ残らず奪っていきました！

Bicycles and darts! Roller skates! Drums! Checkerboards! Tricycles! Popcorn and plums!

自転車にダーツ！ローラースケート！太鼓！チェスボード！三輪車！ポップコーンにプラム！

And he stuffed them in bags.

彼はそれらを次々と袋に詰め込みました。

Then the Grinch, very nimbly, stuffed all the bags one by one up the chimbly!

それからグリンチは実にすばやく、袋を一つずつ煙突の上へと押し上げました！

Then he slunk to the icebox.

次に彼は冷蔵庫へと忍び寄りました。

He took the Whos’ feast!

フーたちのご馳走を奪いました！

He took the Who-pudding! He took the roast beast!

フー・プリンも！ロースト・ビーストも！

He cleaned out that icebox as quick as a flash.

彼はあっという間に冷蔵庫を空っぽにしました。

Why, that Grinch even took their last can of Who-hash!

なんと、グリンチは最後のフー・ハッシュの缶詰まで持っていってしまったのです！

Then he stuffed all the food up the chimney with glee.

それから彼は大喜びで、食べ物をすべて煙突の上へと放り込みました。

“And now,” grinned the Grinch, “I will stuff up the tree!”

「さて次は、」グリンチはニヤリと笑いました。「ツリーを押し上げてやるぞ！」

And the Grinch grabbed the tree and he started to shove when he heard a small sound like the coo of a dove.

そしてグリンチがツリーを掴んで押し込もうとしたそのとき、鳩の鳴き声のような小さな音が聞こえてきました。

He turned around fast and he saw a small Who!

彼が素早く振り向くと、そこには小さなフーがいました！

Little Cindy-Lou Who, who was not more than two.

2歳にもならない、小さなシンディ・ルー・フーでした。

The Grinch had been caught by this tiny Who daughter who got out of bed for a cup of cold water.

冷たいお水を一杯飲もうとベッドを抜け出してきた、この幼いフーの娘に見つかってしまったのです。

She stared at the Grinch and said, “Santa Claus, why,

彼女はグリンチをじっと見つめて言いました。「サンタさん、どうして、」

Why are you taking our Christmas tree? Why?”

「どうして私たちのクリスマスツリーを持っていくの？どうして？」

But you know, that old Grinch was so smart and so slick, he thought up a lie and he thought it up quick!

ですがご存知の通り、あの老いたグリンチはとても賢くずる賢いので、すぐさま嘘を思いつきました！

“Why, my sweet little tot,” the fake Santa Claus lied,

「おやおや、可愛いお嬢ちゃん、」偽のサンタクロースは嘘をつきました。

“There’s a light on this tree that won’t light on one side.

「このツリーのライトがね、片側だけ点かなくなってしまったんだよ。」

“So I’m taking it home to my workshop, my dear.

「だから、おじさんの作業場へ持って帰るところなんだ。」

“I’ll fix it up there. then I’ll bring it back here.”

「そこで修理をして、それからまたここへ戻してあげるからね。」

And his fib fooled the child.

彼の作り話は子供を信じ込ませました。

Then he patted her head and he got her a drink and he sent her to bed.

それから彼は彼女の頭をなで、飲み物を用意してあげて、ベッドへと戻しました。

And when Cindy-Lou Who went to bed with her cup, he went to the chimney and stuffed the tree up!

シンディ・ルー・フーがコップを持ってベッドに戻ると、彼は煙突へ向かい、ツリーを押し上げました！

Then the last thing he took was the log for their fire!

それから、彼が最後に奪ったのは暖炉の薪でした！

Then he went up the chimney himself, the old liar.

それから自分自身も煙突を登っていきました、あの嘘つきな老いぼれは。

On their walls he left nothing but hooks and some wire.

壁にはフックとワイヤー以外、何も残りませんでした。

And the one speck of food that he left in the house was a crumb that was even too small for a mouse.

そして彼が家の中に残した唯一の食べ物は、ネズミにとっても小さすぎるようなパン屑ひとつだけでした。

Then he did the same thing to the other Whos’ houses, leaving crumbs much too small for the other Whos’ mouses!

それから彼は他のフーたちの家でも同じことをし、他のフーたちのネズミにとっても小さすぎるパン屑を残していきました！

It was quarter past dawn…All the Whos still a-bed. All the Whos still a-snooze when he packed up his sled.

夜明けから15分が過ぎ… フーたちはまだみんなベッドの中でした。彼がソリに荷物を詰め込んでいる間、フーたちはまだスヤスヤと眠っていました。

Packed it up with their presents!

フーたちのプレゼントをすべて詰め込んで！

The ribbons! The wrappings! The tags and the tinsel! The trimmings! The trappings!

リボン！包装紙！タグにキラキラの飾り！飾り付けに装飾品！

Three thousand feet up! Up the side of Mount Crumpet, he rode with his load to the tiptop to dump it!

3000フィートもの高さ！クランペット山の斜面を登り、彼は荷物を捨てるために頂上へと向かいました！

“Poo-poo to the Whos!” he was Grinchishly humming.

「フーたちのざまあ見ろ！」彼はグリンチらしく鼻歌を歌っていました。

“They’re finding out now that no Christmas is coming!

「やつらは今ごろ気づいているだろう、クリスマスなんて来ないということに！」

“They’re just waking up! I know just what they’ll do!

「ちょうど目を覚ます頃だ！やつらがどうするか、私にはお見通しだ！」

“Their mouths will hang open a minute or two, then the Whos down in Whoville will all cry Boo-Hoo!”

「一、二分は口をあんぐり開けて、それからフーヴィルのフーたちはみんなして、エーンエーンと泣き出すのさ！」

“That’s a noise,” grinned the Grinch, “that I simply must hear!”

「その泣き声こそ、」グリンチはニヤリと笑いました。「どうしても聞かなければならん！」

So he paused and the Grinch put his hand to his ear.

そこで彼は立ち止まり、グリンチは耳に手をかざしました。

And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.

すると、雪の向こうから立ち上がってくる音が聞こえたのです。

It started in low, then it started to grow…

それは低く始まり、それから次第に大きくなっていきました…

But the sound wasn’t sad! Why, this sound sounded merry!

しかし、その音は悲しいものではありませんでした！おや、これは楽しそうな響きではありませんか！

It couldn’t be so! But it was merry! Very!

そんなはずはありません！でも、楽しそうだったのです！とっても！

He stared down at Whoville! The Grinch popped his eyes!

彼はフーヴィルを見下ろしました！グリンチは目を見開きました！

Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise!

それから彼は震え上がりました！彼が目にしたのは、衝撃的な驚きでした！

Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small, was singing without any presents at all!

フーヴィルの街の誰もが、背の高いのも低いのも、プレゼントなんて一つもないのに歌っていたのです！

He hadn’t stopped Christmas from coming!

彼はクリスマスがやってくるのを止めてはいなかったのです！

It came! Somehow or other, it came just the same!

クリスマスはやってきました！どういうわけか、いつもと同じようにやってきたのです！

And the Grinch with his Grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow stood puzzling and puzzling. “How could it be so?

雪の中で氷のように冷たくなったグリンチの足で、グリンチは立ち尽くし、考えに考え込みました。「一体どういうことだ？」

It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags!”

「リボンがなくてもやってきた！タグがなくてもやってきた！包みも、箱も、袋がなくてもやってきた！」

And he puzzled three hours till his puzzler was sore.

そして彼は三時間もの間、考えすぎて頭が痛くなるまで考え込みました。

Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before!

そのときグリンチは、これまで考えたこともなかったあることに気づきました！

“Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas… perhaps… means a little bit more!”

「もしかするとクリスマスは、」彼は思いました。「店で売っているものじゃないのかもしれない。もしかするとクリスマスは… たぶん… もう少し深い意味があるのかもしれない！」

And what happened then…?

すると、それからどうなったでしょう…？

Well… in Whoville they say that the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day!

さて… フーヴィルで語り継がれているところによれば、グリンチの小さな心臓がその日、三回りも大きくなったのです！

And the minute his heart didn’t feel quite so tight,

そして、心臓の窮屈さがなくなったその瞬間に、

he whizzed with his load through the bright morning light and he brought back the toys and the food for the feast!

彼は荷物を積んで輝く朝日の中を疾走し、おもちゃとご馳走の食べ物を持ち帰りました！

And he… he himself…!

そして彼は… 彼自身が…！

The Grinch carved the roast beast!

グリンチが、ロースト・ビーストを切り分けたのです！
