子供のテレビ見すぎ対策に！英語絵本『Too Much TV』で学ぶスクリーンタイムの守り方

It was a fine spring day in Bear Country.

クマの国は、素晴らしい春の日でした。

The bluebirds were singing.

ルリツグミが歌を歌っていました。

The trout were leaping, and except for one small cloud of dust billowing behind the school bus as it came over the hill, the air was sparkling clean.

マスが跳ね、丘を越えてくるスクールバスの後ろに一筋の土煙が舞い上がっている以外は、空気はキラキラと澄み切っていました。

Mama Bear was inside the family’s Treehouse fixing Brother and Sister Bears’ after school snack.

お母さんグマは一家のツリーハウスの中にいて、お兄ちゃんグマと妹グマの放課後のおやつを用意していました。

Brother and Sister Bear got off the school bus and came into the kitchen with hardly a hello.

お兄ちゃんグマと妹グマはスクールバスを降りると、挨拶もそこそこに台所に入ってきました。

Then they did what they did every day: they took their milk and cookies into the living room and switched on the TV.

それから、いつものようにミルクとクッキーを居間に運び、テレビのスイッチを入れました。

“There’s no question about it,” thought Mama, “those cubs are watching too much TV!”

「間違いなくそうね」とお母さんは思いました。「あの子たちはテレビの見すぎだわ！」

Later, when Papa Bear came in from his shop and joined Brother and Sister, Mama became even more convinced…

後で、お父さんグマが仕事場から戻ってお兄ちゃんと妹の仲間に入ったとき、お母さんはさらに確信を深めました……。

“There’s absolutely no question about it. The whole bear family is watching too much TV!”

「絶対に間違いないわ。クマの一家全員、テレビの見すぎよ！」

She wasn’t quite sure how it had happened.

どうしてそうなってしまったのか、お母さんにはよく分かりませんでした。

Maybe it began when the old fuzzy pictured black and white set broke down and they got a big new color set.

画像がぼやけた古い白黒テレビが壊れて、大きな新しいカラーテレビを買った時から始まったのかもしれません。

Or maybe it started when Papa put the big antenna up on top of the Treehouse and brought in pictures from all over Bear Country.

あるいは、お父さんがツリーハウスのてっぺんに大きなアンテナを立てて、クマの国のあちこちの映像を映し出せるようにした時から始まったのかもしれません。

But however it had happened, one thing was sure – the bear family was spending more and more time watching television and less and less time with all the other things they might be doing instead.

しかし、どうしてこうなったにせよ、一つ確かなことがありました。クマの一家がテレビを見る時間はどんどん増え、その代わりにできたはずの他のことをする時間は、どんどん減っていたのです。

The bear family had always had lively conversations around the dinner table – but not lately.

クマの一家は、いつも夕食のテーブルを囲んで賑やかに会話をしていました。――でも、最近は違います。

Lately, they just sat around and chewed.

最近の彼らは、ただ座って黙々と噛んでいるだけでした。

The cubs had all kinds of fun playing outdoors, But not anymore.

子グマたちは外で遊ぶのが大好きでしたが、もう今は違います。

They were too busy watching Nutty Bear and the Bear Stooges.

「ナッティー・ベア」や「クマの三ばか大将」を見るのに忙しすぎたのです。

That evening after dinner, when Brother and Sister scampered in to turn on the TV, Mama stopped them and said her peace.

その日の夕食後、お兄ちゃんと妹がテレビをつけようと駆け込んできたとき、お母さんは二人を止めて、自分の考えを伝えました。

“We’ve been watching altogether too much television around here!”

「このところ、私たちはあまりにもテレビを見すぎているわ！」

“But Mama,” said Brother, “Nutty Bear is coming on and we’ll miss it!”

「でもお母さん」とお兄ちゃんが言いました。「ナッティー・ベアが始まっちゃうよ、見逃しちゃう！」

“And the Bear Stooges!” added Sister.

「それに、クマの三ばか大将も！」と妹が付け加えました。

“Well, you’ll just have to miss them,” said Mama firmly.

「ええ、見逃すしかないわね」とお母さんはきっぱりと言いました。

“And furthermore,” she added, “you may as well get used to the idea because there’s not going to be any television around here for a whole week!”

「さらにね」とお母さんは続けました。「その考えに慣れたほうがいいわ。これから丸一週間、ここではテレビを一切禁止にするから！」

“No TV for a week?” said the shocked cubs. “But Mama!”

「一週間もテレビなし？」と、子グマたちはショックを受けて言いました。「だってお母さん！」

“Never mind the butts,” said Papa. “Your mother is absolutely right. There’s a lot more to life than TV – like homework, for instance. And fresh air and sunshine. And exercise. No TV for a week is an excellent idea…”

「『だって』はやめなさい」とお父さんが言いました。「お母さんの言う通りだ。人生にはテレビより大切なことがたくさんある。例えば宿題とかな。それに新鮮な空気と日光だ。それに運動も。一週間テレビなしというのは素晴らしい考えだ……。」

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a sports show I want to watch.”

「さて、失礼。見たいスポーツ番組があるんだ。」

“Just a moment, Papa,” said Mama. “No TV for a week means you too.”

「ちょっと待ってお父さん」とお母さんが言いました。「一週間テレビなしっていうのは、あなたも含まれるのよ。」

“What?” said Papa. “You can’t be serious!”

「何だって？」とお父さんは言いました。「冗談だろう！」

But Mama was very serious.

でも、お母さんは大真面目でした。

“What about the news?” protested Papa. “I won’t know what’s going on in the world if I don’t watch the TV news.”

「ニュースはどうするんだ？」とお父さんは抗議しました。「テレビのニュースを見なきゃ、世の中で何が起きているか分からなくなる。」

“Here, try this,” said Mama. “It’s called the newspaper.”

「ほら、これをどうぞ」とお母さんは言いました。「これは新聞というものよ。」

“And the weather?” continued Papa. “How will we know what the weather will be?”

「じゃあ天気は？」とお父さんは食い下がりました。「天気がどうなるか、どうやって知ればいいんだ？」

“Try this,” said Mama. “It’s called putting your hand out the window to see if it’s raining.”

「これを試してみて」とお母さんは言いました。「雨が降っているかどうか、窓から手を出してみるのよ。」

“What are we supposed to do, just sit around and talk?” asked Brother.

「僕たちは何をすればいいの？ ただ座ってお喋りするだけ？」とお兄ちゃんが尋ねました。」

“That’ll be fine for starters,” said Mama, settling comfortably into her rocker.

「手始めにはそれで十分よ」とお母さんは言い、揺り椅子にゆったりと腰を下ろしました。」

But it had been so long since the bear family sat around and talked that they had sort of forgotten how.

しかし、クマの一家が座ってお喋りをするのはあまりに久しぶりだったので、やり方をすっかり忘れてしまっていました。

It really didn’t matter because pretty soon Papa fell asleep and snored so loudly that they wouldn’t have heard each other anyway.

結局はどうでもよくなりました。なぜなら、すぐにお父さんが寝入ってしまい、いびきがうるさすぎて、どのみちお互いの声が聞こえなかったからです。

After school the next day, the cubs looked longingly at the TV, but Mama shooed them out to play.

翌日の放課後、子グマたちは名残惜しそうにテレビを見つめていましたが、お母さんは外へ遊びに行くようにと追い出しました。

Brother’s bike had a tire that needed pumping up and Sister’s trike needed a little oil – and while it seemed strange not watching television, it was fun riding bikes and trikes again, sort of.

お兄ちゃんの自転車はタイヤの空気を入れる必要があったし、妹の三輪車は少し油をさす必要がありました――テレビを見ないのは変な感じがしましたが、また自転車や三輪車に乗るのは、なんだか楽しかったです。

That evening, the cubs worked on their homework, but it wasn’t easy with that blank TV just sitting there staring.

その晩、子グマたちは宿題に取り組みましたが、何も映っていないテレビがそこにあって、こちらを見つめているようでは集中できませんでした。

Then Sister noticed an ad in Papa’s newspaper – an ad for a TV special.

その時、妹がお父さんの新聞にある広告を見つけました。テレビの特番の広告です。

“Oh Mama!” she said, “look! A special!”

「あ、お母さん！」と彼女は言いました。「見て！ 特番だよ！」

“No TV for a week means no TV for a week,” answered Mama. “And besides, Mother Nature has a much bigger special waiting for us. We’re going to sit outside and watch the stars come out.”

「一週間なしといったらなしよ」とお母さんは答えました。「それにね、母なる自然はもっと大きな特番を私たちのために用意してくれているわ。外に座って、星が出てくるのを見るのよ。」

“Watch the stars come out?” complained Sister.

「星が出てくるのを見るの？」と妹は不満を漏らしました。

“I don’t know if I can stand the excitement,” said Brother.

「そんなワクワクすること、耐えられるか分からないよ」とお兄ちゃんは皮肉を言いました。

But as they sat out under the great sky, a spell came over the bears.

しかし、大きな空の下に座っていると、クマたちに魔法がかかったようになりました。

It was all so big and beautiful.

それはとても雄大で、美しいものでした。

The bears stared at the sky.

クマたちは空をじっと見つめました。

So far, not a single star.

今のところ、星は一つも見えません。

“Look!” cried Sister. “Something flying!”

「見て！」と妹が叫びました。「何かが飛んでる！」

“Bats,” said Papa, “out for their breakfast of insects.”

「コウモリだ」とお父さんが言いました。「虫の朝ごはんを食べに出てきたんだよ。」

“Breakfast?” asked Brother.

「朝ごはん？」とお兄ちゃんが尋ねました。」

“That’s right,” answered Papa. “Bats sleep during the day, so this is their breakfast time.”

「その通りだ」とお父さんが答えました。「コウモリは昼間に寝るから、今が朝ごはんの時間なんだ。」

“I see a star!” cried Sister.

「星が見える！」と妹が叫びました。」

She had found the first tiny star.

彼女は最初の小さな星を見つけたのです。」

Soon there were others and after a while, the whole sky was full of stars.

すぐに他にも星が現れ、しばらくすると、空全体が星でいっぱいになりました。

And it was very special, more special than anything they’d ever seen on TV.

それはとても特別で、これまでにテレビで見たどんなものよりも特別でした。

It was a sharper picture too, and a much, much, much bigger screen.

映像も鮮明で、画面もずっと、ずっと、ずっと大きかったのです。

The bear family did all sorts of interesting things over the next few days, so interesting that they hardly thought about TV.

それからの数日間、クマの一家はいろいろな面白いことをしました。あまりに面白かったので、テレビのことはほとんど考えませんでした。

They went on a nature walk and watched tadpoles hatch out of eggs.

自然観察の散歩に出かけ、オタマジャクシが卵からかえるのを見守りました。

They watched an orb spider spin a magnificent web.

オニグモが見事な巣を張る様子を観察しました。

They went shopping at the Bear Country Mall.

彼らはクマの国のモールへ買い物に出かけました。

Sister used some of her savings to buy a knitting spool and some yarn.

妹は貯金を使って、リリアン編機と毛糸を買いました。

Brother bought a cube puzzle.

お兄ちゃんはキューブパズルを買いました。

They did have to keep an eye on Papa though.

ただ、お父さんからは目を離さないようにしなければなりませんでした。

When they were at the mall, the cubs caught Papa in the TV store sneaking a look at a game show.

モールにいたとき、子グマたちはお父さんがテレビ店でこっそりクイズ番組を見ているのを見つけました。

Another time, he went downstairs in the middle of the night for a peek at The Late Late Movie, but Mama and the cubs stopped him just in time.

またある時は、夜中に深夜映画を盗み見ようと階下へ降りていきましたが、お母さんと子グマたちが間一髪で止めました。

The next evening, it was the last day of their no TV week – the bear family was having a lively conversation at the dinner table.

翌日の夕方、テレビなし週間の最後の日でした――クマの一家は、夕食のテーブルで賑やかに会話を楽しんでいました。

They all agreed that the week had been a success, but Brother had a question.

みんなこの一週間は成功だったと認めましたが、お兄ちゃんには疑問がありました。

“Mama,” he asked, “what is it you don’t like about TV? What do you have against it?”

「お母さん」とお兄ちゃんは尋ねました。「テレビのどこが嫌いなの？ 何が不満なの？」

“Goodness,” said Mama, “I don’t have anything against TV. I like it. What I’m against is the TV habit – sitting in front of it day after day like old stumps waiting for dry rot to set in.”

「あらあら」とお母さんは言いました。「テレビに不満があるわけじゃないわ。テレビは好きよ。私が反対しているのは『テレビ中毒』、つまり、腐るのを待っている古い切り株みたいに、毎日毎日テレビの前に座り続けることなの。」

“Well,” said Brother, “tomorrow I’m going to get a whole bunch of snacks and watch TV all day.”

「ふーん」とお兄ちゃんが言いました。「明日はおやつをたくさん用意して、一日中テレビを見るよ。」

“Me too,” said Sister. “Me too,” said Papa.

「私も」と妹が言いました。「お父さんもだ」とお父さんが言いました。」

But the only one who did watch it all day was Papa.

でも、本当に一日中見ていたのは、お父さんだけでした。

Brother got interested in his cube puzzle and finally solved it.

お兄ちゃんはキューブパズルに夢中になり、ついにそれを解きました。

Sister started knitting a rug on her knitting spool.

妹は編み機でラグを編み始めました。」

Finally, even Papa had enough and decided to bait his hook for a couple of those leaping trout.

最後には、お父さんでさえもう十分だと感じ、あの跳ねるマスを釣るために針に餌をつけることにしました。
